Fort Bragg House Materials
Here's a list of the materials and other resources we're using to build this house. The general idea was to build a smaller, cozy, cottage-style house that looked nice on the outside and had higher-end finishes on the inside.
| Exterior | |
| Siding | We chose a traditional lap siding look and used a fiber cement composite material from Hardiplank. It can be easily painted, requires little if any maintenance and has a 50 yr warranty. We used the woodgrain texture. |
| Stone | A composite veneer from El Dorado. Used on the front of the house and the chimney. Gives the house that "cottage" look. |
| Windows | Classic white vinyl single-hung with embedded grids. Same for the sliders. |
| Roof | Centennial Slate asphalt shingles. They have a nice depth to them and have a 30 year warranty. By then we'll either be dead or too old to care. |
| Deck | For limited maintenance and a 20 year warranty we used a composite material rather than redwood or cedar. We chose the gray color for the decking, and square balusters and beveled caps for the railing. No paint required. |
| Porch | Slate was picked for the surface and front steps. Golden Plains is the color. We're going with 12x12 squares. |
| Paint | Colors are Navaho White for the fascia and window/keystone trim, Plymouth Rock for the main body and Dragon's Breath for the front door and shutters. |
| Shutters | Using the board and batten style made out of western red cedar. I may build these myself. |
| Garage | We chose a Clopay Coachman Collection Series 1 rollup with a Fluer de Lis handle, Spade Strap hinge and arched solid windows. I'm going to coat the floor with U-Coat-It or something like it. |
| Lighting | We've selected the Berkshire collection from Hinkley Lighting. |
| Entry |
Baldwin Bethpage series with
antique nickel finish. |
| Walkways | For the time being we'll use crushed gravel. Eventually I'll replace it with cobblestone pavers. |
| Driveway | Same plan as for the walkways. |
| Interior | |
| Cabinetry | Custom-made, paint grade, square flush-mount doors. Cabinets are in the kitchen, hallway, laundry room and master bath. They'll be painted white. |
| Kitchen | KitchenAid
dishwasher is a double-drawer style. GE hood vent fits well between upper shelves. Dacor microwave is conventional. Dacor range is gas (propane). Dacor refrigerator has a french door bottom freezer. Kohler sink is called a farm sink. Our sink is white. Moen faucet has a stainless finish. The countertops are a dark granite. |
| Plumbing | Moen
lavatory faucets with a brushed nickel finish. Moen showerheads with a brushed nickel finish. Kohler master sink. The guest sink is the same model, but is 24" wide. Kohler toilets. Moen faucet (stainless finish). and Kohler sink in the laundry room. GE washer and dryer. We had a hot water circulating pump system installed. No more waiting for hot water when you want to take a shower on a cool morning. |
| Floors | The
wood floors throughout the house are from
Siberian Floors imported from Russia. They're called
Antique Fumed Oak with 6" wide planks. The tile in the laundry room and bathrooms is Graal Series Montsegur V3 glazed porcelain tile. The carpet in the bedrooms is a Ralph Lauren color called Moosewood. |
| Locks | Baldwin Bethpage series with
antique nickel finish. We chose
levers for the interior. |
| Lighting | We selected Quorum International Cipriani style for the kitchen, island bar, bath and fireplace sconce lights. For the pantry we chose Triarch Grand. The hallway, entry area and laundry room is Nulco Princeton and Palladian. |
