Afternoon With an Old Friend

Ancient dog
lies at my feet
dogdreams disturbing
her sleep

Long claws
scrabble
along unseen blacktop

Her breath
is punctuated
by puppy cries
and short barks

She dreams on
of younger eyes,
firmer teeth
wild frantic car chases
