by Dave Lieben

none shall pass

Seley won their rematch with Saxman Seaport 87-83 at the Gateway Recreation Center Tuesday to win the Men's 'B' Division City League Championship. Saxman Seaport had come out of the loser's bracket to win Sunday's game, forcing the rematch.

The game was close all the way, Saxman had a six-point lead on a few different occasions, but was unable to pull away. The first half featured six three-point baskets by Saxman's Archie Dundas, helping his team to a 49-46 halftime lead.

A basket by Saxman's Arne Denny gave his team a 83-79 lead with 1:25 left. After Saxman's Wally Sherwood missed the front part of a one-and-one, Seley's Sam Marrow hit a three to make it 83-82. Another Seley basket gave them a one-point lead with :25 left. Seley's Clark Slanaker was fouled, and made both free throws to give Seley a 86-83 lead. Saxman's Sherwood went to the free throw line with 20 seconds left, but again missed the front of a one-and-one. Seley's Clay Slanaker was fouled, missed both free throws but Seley got the rebound. Seley's Marrow was fouled, and made his first free throw to give his team a four-point lead with :14 left.

Marrow led Seley with 23 points, followed by Clark Slanaker with 17 and Clay Slanaker with 14. Robert Rodriguez had nine points, followed by Aaron Wright with eight, Tommy Jones with six, and Con McClennan with four. Harp Seley chipped in with some tough 'D'.

Saxman's scoring was less balanced, coming primarily from the duo of Dundas (38 points) and Tom Booth (22 points). Also contributing were Kurt Thomas with seven points, Arne Denny with five, Wilbur Dundas with four, David Denny with five or so, and Sherwood with two. Larry Dewitt and Ron Trout helped out in a non-scoring capacity.

The many supporters of both teams were vocal in their support, and got to see a great game. The Men's 'A' Division Championship will be played Wednesday at 7:30 at the Gateway Recreation Center.
