Kanoe's roving reporter, Gigi Pilcher,
roamed the Plaza Port West Mall on Sunday to ask Ketchikan residents
how they celebrated New Year's Eve and to share their New Year's
resolutions with the Kanoe Readers.
Safeway employee and former Metlakatla
resident, Peter Usher said he spent the evening walking
around town watching other people celebrate. His New Year's resolution
is to quit smoking. | |

Ketchikan poet and writer, Phoebe
Newman, celebrated with friends at a bonfire at Herring
Cove. When asked about a New Year's resolution, Phoebe said she
is working on cleaning things up on her computer and getting
a book ready for publication this summer. |
Kevin Murphy, Deputy Director
of Gateway Human Services, was busy loading up on veggies to
fulfill on his New Year's resolution which is to swim four days
a week and lose twenty pounds . |

Fran Williams, a volunteer
at the Ketchikan Resource Center, said she spent New Year's Eve
watching the world celebrate on television. For a resolution,
she is going to help Patti Fay to quit smoking and to try to
get more exercise. |
Ed Wilburn, Ketchikan High
School Activities Director, spent New Year's Eve at home with
his wife and children drinking sparkling apple cider and enjoying
his family. |

Kanoe's very own Margaret Cloud
reported that she spent the evening trying to keep her eight
year old son, Noah Cloud, awake to welcome in the New Millennium,
along with her husband. They watched the rest of the world ring
in the new century safely at home together. Her resolution for
the New Year is to get rid of excessive material things in her
life. |
Anita Stewart, Safeway cashier,
spent the evening having dinner with friends and watched movies
as her celebration. |

Plaza Port West employee, Roger
Dalhaug, said he went to bed at 11:30 pm and was fast a sleep
when the clock struck midnight. He had no resolution other than
to get a good night's sleep. |
Ralph Bolton said he stayed
home and watched movies. |

Betty Thomas recounted that
on New Year's Day six years ago she was in Ketchikan General
hospital giving birth to her son, Mario Thomas. Mario was the
first baby born on New Years in 1994, arriving at 3:25 pm. This
year, Betty and her husband Scott celebrated by attending the
Mayor's Ball at the Ted Ferry Civic Center. Betty said it was
very nice and lots of fun. She said she woke up with a great
New Year's resolution but then fell back to sleep and when she
woke up again she couldn't remember what it was. |
