This story was found in an old Brown notebook and provided to me by Elaine Lydick:

WHY CYRUS BROWN USED NO TOBACCO
"Cyrus, Like most country children, received his education in 'the little red school house'. One year, his teacher, being a man, used tobacco and had a habit of leaving the old fashioned 'plug' on the window sill, where, should any of the scholars feel so inclined, they could help themselves. Cyrus did just that -- and became quite proficient in the 'art', if it can be so called."
"One night he went home with some in his mouth, which did not escape his mother's attention. She said to him, 'Cy, what have you in your mouth?' Knowing better thatn to lie to her, he told her the truth, where upon she said for him to follow her."
"They went into the backyard and she applied a barrel stave to the seat of his pants with no little force, thereby taking all the taste of tobacco from him, and he never used it in any form."
