Fault Finding

Proverbs 17:9

Disregarding another person's faults preserves love; telling about them separates close friends.

1 Corinthians 13:7 Love covers with silence the faults of others. Love trusts and hopes and endures all things.

These verses tell me why most relationships end in breakup or divorce. People in such relationships concentrate only for the faults in others. They seek perfection in others, and they never find it. All people have faults, so the fault-finders are always successful in their search. People seek other people to be friends with, and when they find a fault, all they see in that person is the faults. If I showed you a white piece of paper with a tiny black dot, most people would ignore all the pure white that covers 99.9 percent of the paper and concentrate only on the black dot.

If God had this attitude about us, we have no hope of salvation. By God's standards, we are filled with faults. But He sent His Son to the cross anyway, because He saw the potential good in us if only we turn towards Him. We are so weak that we commit faults every day, yet God promises to forgive and forget our faults if only we confessed them to Him and repent and ask for forgiveness. The blood of Christ that cleansed us when we initially obeyed the gospel, keeps on purifying us as we work on correcting our faults.

So instead of looking for faults in others, why don't we try to look for the good in others? And if we must insist on spending our lifetimes looking for faults, a lifetime of faults can be found when we look at ourselves in the mirror.
