THE LEGEND OF BARFUS (chapter 1) by Matthew Sanderson ------------------------------------------------------ If you look for originality in a game you could do worse than play Legend of Barfus. You play as Barfus, a megalomaniacal warrior who was slain in battle and has been resurrected by the mysterious Vedal. Most of the game takes place in a dungeon until you venture out to green and pleasant lands and basically go around being particularly nasty to everyone. This is the only RPG to my knowledge where you play as a villain and the appeal of it cannot be under stated. As well as that Legend of Barfus has a lot of very original (and gruesome) ideas which are combined with a dry sense of humour. For example for one particular mission you have to kidnap a princess and encounter a certain Nintendo RPG hero who will remain nameless. All these elements combined make playing the game a very enjoyable experience. Graphics are mainly defaults with some custom sprites thrown in here and there and the graphics are very good for setting the tone of the game. The game's tragic flaw is that there's only one chapter, and it's a short one at that. The idea of having seperate chapters accessable by saving your sav. file is very original but if there aren't any more chapters that really defeats the point. That is why I've given it such a low mark. Having said that there is plenty to do and the game is certainly worth downloading. If you love RPG 95, have an hour or two to spare and enjoy being disproportionately cruel to mushroom men give it a go! DAN SEZ- 3/5
