The Death of Bodybuilding

I just read the July 98 issue of MuscleRag- I mean MuscleMag. In it on page 116 is an article on Pump n' Pose, an injectable oil that when injected into and around the muscle will make the muscle appear bigger. This oil will not aid in strength; in fact it may hamper the range of motion. This "stuff" that will last in your body permanently was invented by Chris Clark a German bodybuilder (who looks more like Chris Farly then a serious bodybuilder). He is charging $400 a bottle so that people can stick themselves with this and have big, shinny, fake looking muscles.

Is he nuts?...No we are. Anyone who associates themselves with a sport that encourages you to inflate your body with oil just to look bigger must be sick. Yet I love bodybuilding. Like many of you it has given me strength, confidence and a decent looking physique. If steroids, GH and all the rest of the drugs weren't already, then PnP is a cry of help. Our sport is dying. It is bad enough that every top bodybuilder sticks themsleves full of enough drugs to make a Colombian drug barren jealous and lies claiming to be the product of hard work, a proper diet and good genetics, but now some (we all could tell who) have been shooting themselves full of oil.

Hold on a minute; forget what you've come to accept about bodybuilding and its cult-like freakiness. Humans are injecting their muscles with oil so that they look bigger -GIVE ME A BREAK. How ridiculous is this sport. Bodybuilding began a weird sideshow sport and then in the Arnold era (even though he used steroids) it began to come out of the closet and people realized that bodybuilding is good for you physically and mentally.

This is no longer the truth. Now bodybuilders have become a joke, every time steroids or performance drugs are discussed the world thinks of us. We have taken a sport that anyone could participate in and killed it. What did you just mumble? "Oh well were gonna be in the Olympics soon so that will be drug free and then are sport will change." What the hell are u injecting there IS NO WAY B.B. WILL EVER BE A REAL OLYMPIC SPORT. Even if we did have a chance are there any naturals who look near what our current "champs" look like?? NO, maybe if the supposed naturals like LaCour, Davey, etc. could find a means to pass the drug tests, they still would not represent our best athletes. I know the Olympics are hardly drug free now but bodybuilders abuse more in quantity and variety then any other type of athlete, how else do you explain 275lb men who are only 5'9'' with 4% bodyfat.

I don't have any answers other than we the fans and consumers must demand better testing, and expect less from the pro's - it didn't take a ton of drugs to make Arnold or Franco or Even Lee Labrada or Bob Paris. We must change something now or bodybuilding will return to the sideshow attraction it once was.

These are only the ramblings of one fan that thinks we've gone too far, but if all of us could learn to see the problem the sport will change and thrive.
