LiFE OF BRiAN
Disc 3
This disc covers the years 1967 to 1971.
While touring in England, The Beach Boys became the #1 band in British music polls. Brian set even higher goals for himself, wanting to top Pet Sounds. He set out to write a "teenage symphony to God," titled SMiLE. Brian collaborated with lyricist Van Dyke Parks, who was known for his obscure poetic style. This, along with Brian's increased involvement with drugs, proved to be an ill-fated combination. When The Beach Boys returned from their tour, they began to question Brian regarding the bizarre lyrics, and the strange, yet innovative musical concepts. SMiLE did not follow the tried-and-true formula that had brought them success thus far. Frustrated, Brian dropped out of his role as the band's producer, but agreed to continue writing music for subsequent albums.
