Jerry Falwell In The SBC

We have been exposing Jerry Falwell for the compromiser that he is for several years. We exposed his joining of the Southern Baptist Convention, and some tried to deny this. Now the facts are out. He was a registered delegate to the Southern Baptist Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah. Not only was he present, but he took several delegates from his Church. He is not only in the SBC, but he claims that he is an independent Baptist, and that he intends to remain in the Baptist Bible Fellowship International. If they have the courage of a field mouse they will throw him out. I don't think they have that much courage or convictions.

It is evident that Jerry Falwell is going to try to influence as many BBF and other similar churches as possible, to join the Southern Baptist Convention. We have published this before, but this has been denied by others in the Falwell camp. It is a shame that some of the old war horses of the BBF are not in charge. They are all dead, or out of the loop of power. Keep watching for further developments.

Falwell Registers as Messenger at SBC

By David Winfrey

Kentucky Western Recorder

SALT LAKE CITY (ABP) Jerry Falwell has spoken at the Southern Baptist Convention Pastors' Conference, preached in the pulpits of Southern Baptist churches and put Southern Baptists on the trustee board of his Liberty University.

So in many respects his first-time registration as a voting messenger to the SBC annual meeting simply confirmed the trend in which he has been moving for several years, the pastor of Thomas Road Church in Lynchburg, Va., said last week.

"I've been attending the Southern Baptist Convention for many years. This is the first time we have taken 10 messengers and voted," Falwell said.

Falwell and seven other members of Thomas Road Church registered as messengers, Registration Secretary Lee Porter said. The church reported giving $10,000 to SBC causes last year through a new state convention formed by conservatives in Virginia.

"We have officially joined about a year ago," Falwell said, adding he has no intention of leaving other independent groups he has supported through the years. "We still hold membership in and give support to other groups that we've been affiliated with for 42 years."

His decision to join the SBC follows the completion of its move toward a more conservative stance, Falwell said.

"All six of the seminaries now have biblical inerrantists as presidents. All the Southern Baptist agencies now are headed by inerrantists, and the thing that many of us thought never could happen that is the return of the denomination to biblical authority has happened."

Other churches also have joined the convention for the same reason, Falwell said, noting, "I'm sure others will."

"There is now no reason why we shouldn't be a part of" he added. "We now feel the liberty to support the convention and to participate."

Falwell doesn't expect criticism from independent Baptists for the decision to join the SBC formally, he said.

"We are still in good fellowship," he said. "We have not abandoned the Baptist Bible Fellowship," a group of independent Baptist churches.

He doesn't intend to take an SBC leadership role, Falwell said. His responsibilities for his Liberty University, the "Old Time Gospel Hour" broadcast and the 20,000-member church occupy his time, he explained.

"I don't have any plan to get politically involved, just spiritually involved," he said. "I really, at age 64, don't have the energy to take on anything new."

Falwell, a longtime friend of new SBC President Paige Patterson, said he does intend to be involved in Patterson's goal of baptizing 1 million new Christians during the year 2000. (End of article from the Kentucky Western Recorder

Falwell's Fallacy

Falwell boasts that "all six of the seminaries now have biblical inerrantists as presidents." He ignores the fact that many of the faculty members are not biblical inerrantists. He ignores the fact that every State Convention of any consequence is still controlled by the moderates and liberals. The conservatives have tried to take over the Texas Baptist Convention and have failed. He ignores the fact that all of the major Colleges in the SBC are still controlled by the moderates and liberals. Perhaps he is hoping that this will help his own University, by getting students from the SBC churches to come to his school. He ignores the fact that there are over 1,200 women now ordained as preachers in the SBC.

Falwell also ignores the doctrinal error that is prevalent, even among the most conservative leaders of the SBC. The new conservatives, are for all practical purposes, Prot estants and not Baptists. This is a far cry from the staunch Baptists of the past, such as B. H. Carroll, George W. Truett, Geo. W. McDaniel, John A. Broadus, James P. Boyce, and a host of great leaders in the SBC of the past. Compared with these leaders of the past, the present conservative leaders are little more than interdenominational Protestants.

He also ignores the fact that almost every corrupt version in the English language, is now accepted in the SBC. This is a far cry from the past, but apparently Falwell is not interested in having a pure Bible.

How can we trust Falwell's judgment, when a large part of his so-called Moral Majority were Roman Catholics. He also welcomed the cult of Mormonism into his organization as well. He has allowed the notorious Bob Harrington, the former chaplain of Bourbon Street, back into his pulpit. He allowed Billy Graham to deliver the graduation address at his University. Falwell's credibility with true Independent Fundamental Baptists is at an all time low. We welcome his joining of the SBC. We think he should quit claiming to be an Independent Baptist. True Independent Fundamental Baptists should say, "Good-bye, Jerry, and good riddance.
