Shinra is an Electric power company...at least that's what they call themselves. They provide power to the masses using Mako energy. A natural "magical" source of energy. It is found in abundance in fertil areas. Unfortunatly, the Mako reactors suck the life force out of the planet to convert it to energy, not allowing it to continue cycling. The characters are on a mission to save the planet from an evil madman who used to be a friend of Cloud's. Unfortunatly they must also stop Shinra, and go through their armed gaurd (known as SOLDIER-which Cloud also used to be a part of). A professor by the name of Hojo.
