4DJSONLY: How to do Effects manually with two Turntables or CD Players
The first things you will need are:
Two turntables or CD Players with pitch controls
Two copies of the same song/track/album
A DJ mixer with at least two channels
Good headphones (to cue up the other source with)
Cables to connect everything.
Then, you?ll need? Optional System Components:
Amplifier or home stereo system
Speakers that will handle the amp's output level or home speakers, you can drive PA speakers at 1-1/2 to 2X their RMS rating
Echo/Delay:
First get the two song sync'd with each other. Then bump the edge of the platter or hold the record [on a turntable] or nudge the pitch control off-of-zero. The delay is controlled by the variation in pitch or how long you held the record.
Flanging:
This is a delay done with the pitch control. First, Get the two songs sync'd with each other and then move the pitch control on one in either direction. Do not go too far or the one deck will fall out of sync with the other deck and make a delayed reverbing sound. You will eventually hear it peak. When it peaks, bring the pitch control back toward ZERO.
Eventually, with enough practice, you will be able to flange on ANY part of a record or CD.
Beat-matching:
When you have the pitch/tempo of two songs perfectly in-sync with each other. The bass lines match together and sound good as a whole. Using the equaliser knobs on the mixer, one can clean up the sound by adjusting the 3 or 4 knobs.
