John Grant named 1st team All-American in men's lacrosse
June 10, 1999 - UD
senior attackman John Grant has become just the second Blue Hen men's lacrosse
player to earn first team All-American honors, as he was named to the United
States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Division I All-American team.
Grant was one of a
school-record four Blue Hen players honored for their play during the 1999
season. Senior midfielder Kevin Lavey was named to the third team, while senior
midfielder Jim Bruder and senior defenseman Marc Traverso were both named
honorable mention selections. Delaware's previous high was three All-Americans
in 1984.
Grant became the first UD player to earn first
team honors since Jim Albertson was honored during the 1970 season. Only four
other UD players-Tom Stanziale (1992), Randy Powers
(1985-86), Reagan Beck (1971) and Don Swan (1950-51)-have been named
to the second team.
Grant, who earned
USILA honorable mention All-American honors
last season, led all NCAA Division I players
in scoring in 1999 with a school record 110
points on 56 goals and a school record 54
points. His point total was the second highest
season total in NCAA Division I varsity history. The owner of 96 career goals and 81 assists in just
two season, Grant also was named America East
Player of the Year in May. Lavey, a four-year
All-America East selection, earned
All-American honors after switching from
attack to midfield this season. He was the
Hens' third leading scorer with 36 goals and 12 assists and finished second on the all-time UD
goal-scoring list with 153.
Bruder, another
four-year All-America East selection, scored 28 goals and 12 assists in 1999 and
finished with 117 career goals.
Traverso, a two-time All- America East pick, earned national honors
despite missing two games with a knee injury. He posted 52 groundballs this
season.
The Blue Hens, under
head coach Bob Shillinglaw, posted the best season in school history this
spring. The Hens won their first America East Conference title since 1994,
advanced to the NCAA tournament for just the second time in school history and
set a school record with a mark of 14-3.
