Wheels & Brakes
updated January 4, 2004
I had Rosenhan hydraulic brakes (now Matco) and the stock KR wheels.  I ordered Diehl's axles with my gear kit.  To start off, I needed a spacer to move the brake assembly away from the gear leg.  I also wanted to take up some space on the axle.  So, I decided to slide the spacer over the axle instead of between the axle and lower gear bracket.  With that, I had to start by cutting a piece of the old spring bar and shaping it to match the axle.  This was harder that I thought.  I ended up with a metal cutting blade on my table saw, which made is extremely easy.  I was done cutting and shaping one spacer in about 5 minutes.  Next, I had to bore a hole to mirror the axle.  The axle reduces from 5/8" to 3/4" and then has a radius.  I started by boring the 3/4" first to 1/2" depth.  Then I finished it with the 5/8".  You'll notice below (right) I left one side square to make it easy to clamp.
Next, I filed the radius into the spacer on the 3/4" side.  You can see on left how the axle is shaped and how the spacer had to be shaped.  On the right, it fit like a glove!
Here's what they look like when the spacers are done and the whole assembly (lower gear attach fitting, axle, spacer, & brake plate) are match drilled.
Here is the assembly bolted on the leg with the brakes installed.  There is plenty of space for the brake disc.  Also, I was able to get the brake callipers to almost 90 degrees.
