Rudder Pedals
updated November 29, 2003
I looked at several other builders' redder pedals before deciding how to design mine.  To start with, I wanted the brake cylinders mounted to the rudder pedals and not have to worry about the geometry configurations.  So I had some "tabs" made from some scrap 4130 welded to the base of each of the pilot's pedals (left).  Next, I really liked what Bill Clapp did with his by adding some 4130 tubing to the sides to keep the rudder cables tucked up against the side of the fuselage.  I used some extra 0.75" OD 4130 tubing that I had left over from building my dual controls (right).
Next, it was on to the design of the rudder pedals themselves.  I started with two 6" pieces of 0.25" 6061 alum angle (4"x4").  I used some 1" Nylon bar as the bushings.  They're probably a little heavier than I would have liked, but at least it's forward of the CG.  :-)   You will notice that the pedals rest against the vertical rudder arm when not engaged.  This is to keep from putting any negative pressure on the cylinders inadvertantly.  Also, I left some of the bend in the angle on the right pedal so that both pedals are parallel and the same leg distance.
