Alice Walker's Biography

Alice Walker was born on February 8th, 1944, in Eatonton, Georgia. She was the youngest out of 8 children. Her parents worked for a group of sharecroppers and dairy farmers. When she was 8 years old her brother shot her in the eye with with a bb gun which left her blind in one eye. After that she felt ugly and that people were scared of her. However, that was not entirely true with her teachers.

Alice graduated from Spelmar High school in 1965 as a Valedictorian. She later moved to Mississippi to go to college at Sarah Lawrence University, class of 1969 . Alice was a quite, shy women after she graduated from college. She lived alone in a small apartment in Mississippi for several years until she met her soon to be husband.) He moved into the apartment Alice Walker had purchased. They lived together for many years Her husband, Mel Leventhal, encouraged her to start writing different varieties of writing. She experimented with all the possible writing categories but adored poetry the most. She spent 2 years writing poetry for fun but then found poems where not her specialty. Her specialty was writeing biographies and novles dealing with rasism and womens rights. She decited she wanted to help the world in a way which was by being invoved in the Cival Rights Movement. She was very interested in making a difference in the world and thats what she did. She stood up for her rights and made a move in front of the police. Luckaly, she didnt get arrested but got a big fine. She didnt do anything like it again.

In 1967, Alice wrote a book called "The Third LIfe" based on the life of Grange Copeland. It was her first publicaly publishd book. It was a New York Times best seller until 1969.

Alice continued writing books from 1979 through 1982. Then she stopped writing and starting Equal rights progam. In 1980, she went on strike for abusive situations. She did that for one year.

On May 13th, 1972, Her first daughter, Rebbeca Walker, was born. She is now 30 years of age.

Alice has won two American Book Awards in 3 years.

Alice lives at home in Pennsilvania with her husband and her dog, Mandy.
