HISTORY 2000 - 03
Music: "A Fifth of Beethoven"
2000 - 2001

In the final year of the moderatorship of Mrs. Elizabeth Schepps, the T.V. Team of Jon Bernt (Captain), David Seeber, and David Macedonia lost to Park View in a close match.  Much of the rest of the year was spent in preparation for the upcoming 8th Grade Tournament, which has since been discontinued.  Leadership of the club was handed over to Mrs. Nadine Schiavo and Mr. Robert Hall.

2001 - 2002

Mrs. Schiavo and Mr. Hall were joined by Mrs. Maureen McMahon, a former It's Academic Club moderator at Osbourn H.S.  However, this year, the club had to organize in a hurry, being given an early date for taping.  Preparations had begun late in the school year after the 8th Grade Tournament in Spring 2001 to put together a T.V. Team in less than one month.  The team was Nick Yenson (Captain), David Seeber, and Stephen Chanderbhan.  The three finished a close third to South Lakes (1st) and W.T. Woodson (2nd).  Following the taping, membership was diminished as this was clearly a rebuilding year for the club.  Student leadership was handed over to the juniors and sophomores of the club.  For the first time, O'Connell sent teams to the University of Maryland Spring and Fall Tournaments (captained by Stephen Chanderbhan).  For the first time as well, the club was involved in the worldwide Knowledge Master Open, and in the spring and fall editions, finished quite well.  New leadership and future promise began to show.  For results, see link at the bottom of the page.

2002 - 2003

With the departure of Mr. Hall, Miss Theresa Lee stepped in as the third moderator of the club.  This year, with a late taping date and a couple of tournaments prior, there is much hope in the club.  There is once again a large membership base, solid senior leadership, and plenty of young talent.  So far, this year, the club sent one team to the University of Maryland and, for the first time, made the playoffs (only the top 16 out of 64 teams make it), losing in the first round to Thomas Jefferson H.S.'s A Team.  For the Fall 2002 Knowledge Master Open, the team finished 7th (out of 32) in the state of VA and 98th overall.  At the Beach Ball Classic, the team (Stephen Chanderbhan - Captain, Matt Jones, Robert Svercl, and Matt Wadden) finished an impressive 5th out of 16 teams.  FOR MORE ON THIS, SEE THE "NEWS" LINK AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE.  The club will participate in the spring tournament as well, it appears, and will also send a strong 3-person team for the taping.  The taping will be on 18 January 2003 against Park View and Lake Braddock.  For results, see links at the bottom of the page.
