Well according to mobile dj's it is. Instead of logging around two or three cd players, two cassette decks, one massive table to place the equipment on! You can simply download a free version of Winamp / Sonique / Windows Media Player and you are on your way.
Winamp v2 comes with N Mixer (as mentioned in "software") well designed crossfader and cue master. Sonique has a plug-in that also crossfades automatically.

Decks
Crossfade - Slide crossfader from one side to the other. Speed is really up to you.
Beats Per Minute (BPM) Mixing - Little differcult. What to do is you got to listen to the one song through your head phones and play the other through the Loud Speakers. Start the song throught the head phones on the first looped BD (Bass Drum) or Snare. Really depends on the next song crossfading into the other.
Sound Effects - Well if you got like R3000 - R10000 to play around with or you ARE serious about Pro Dj'ing then go out and get it. There are plenty of buttons to press, turn and switch.My addvice is to go for Vocal Cut, Bass Cut and Treble Cut Effects. Makes mixing sound pro!
Scratching :) - This is the definition of DJ. When you think about a DJ you think about scratching the vinyl till it can't be scratched no more. What you do is you take a piece of a song like an EASY example - MJ's - Billie Jean. Song starts with the BD then to snare now with this you loop the BD by moving the record forward and reverse. Not slow... make the scratch to be x2 to the original beat. F.Y.I - Mj's BPM for this song is 120BPM.
Easy Mix:- Try it your self with out the help of a beat counter:- ake Mj's Billie Jean... Slow it down to about Eminem's - Without Me song then Play Billie Jean until the bridge then run Eminem crossfade it up. [make shore you beat mix exact or else it just wont go] Then when Eminems - Without me's Last Chorus ends Start Mj's - Rock With Youbut make shore you drop the pitch just two notches. There you have it!
Software
Crossfade - Using Sonique its automatic.Just select your songs in the playlist and runaway from your computer and let your hair down.Using Winamps N Mixer you can do it manual or automatic or Winamps Plug-in that comes with it select just like how you would in Sonique... simple as that!
Beats Per Minute (BPM) Mixing - Using DJ MIX Lite it will analyse the bpm and the rest is up to you.
Sound Effects - Go to winamp's site and just look around... my fav is the DFX and the Fronmage.
Scratching :) - With VTT [Virtual TurnTable] "they" say you can scratch with it... but i was really not impressed with it. Poor performance. But Other than that that was my first Mixer I used an the best still is but not if you wanna scratch. Enter Native Instrument's product called Traktor! Awesome. Processor might need to be fast and Ram but it really Kicks A**. BPM is there, Punch in and out is there, Recording is as easy as 1,2,3. Its like a tiny program with out the "Weigh".
