When the practices taught by the Vedas and the institutes of LAW shall nearly have ceased, and the close of the Kali age shall be nigh, a portion of that divine being who exists of his own spiritual nature in the character of Brahma, and who is the beginning and the end, and who comprehends all things, shall descend upon the earth: he will be born in the family of Vishnuyasas, an eminent Brahman of Shambhala� village, as Kalki, endowered with the eight superhuman faculties. By his irresistible might he will destroy all the Mlechchhas and theives and all whose minds are devoted to iniquity. He will then re-establish righteousness upon the earth; and the minds of those who live at the end of the Kali age shall be awakened, and shall be as pellucid* as crystal. The men who are thus changed by� virtue of that peculiar time shall be as the seeds of human beings, and shall give birth to a race who shall follow the LAWS of the Krita, or age of Purity.

When the monastery Tashilhunpo was built in 1447 by the 1st Dalai Lama dGe-'dun-grub [1391-1475] a large statue of Maitreya was erected, these words were spoken: "Now that an excellent statue of Maitreya has been erected, may these embodied beings who engage in the concordant conditions enter the glory of practicing the Great Vehicle Dharma, before the feet of the venerable Lord Maitreya.
At whatever time Maitreya as a powerful sun rises on the peak of the Diamond Seat Mountain opening up the lotus of my intelligence, may I refresh the fortunate host.
At that time may the Buddha Maitreya, very pleased, place his right hand on my head and prophesy the supreme, incomparable enlightenment.� Then may I speedily attain Budda hood for the sake of all living beings.
Also however many be the magnificent practices of all Buddhas of the three ages and their spiritual sons (the bodhisattvas) in all their illustrious lives, may I, compressing them together, preach them correctly!
Having recourse to the golden hilt of analysing the spiritual cloth with its colourful lines of good explanation, may I install in the ten directions the victory banner of the Teaching marked with the jewel tip of the three instructions.
May all persons who are Scripture-holders spread and expand upon the teaching, which is the source of benefit and joy! May the Buddhas' Teaching, the source of felicity to all embodied beings forever spread.
May the force of continual contemplation of love (maitri), in three ways, bring the blessing of the Buddha Maitreya who overcomes maras by the troops of love and protects all beings by the Power of Love". |
