Shaun's Stimulating Taping Life!
Well, if you stumbled onto this you must be too overexcited after shoving a hammer into your monkeys skull. Don't even act like you don't know what I'm talkin' about. Well this page should de-stimulate you. Just to let you know, this is indeed my taping set-up. This is what I use to make recordings of almost all concerts I attend. I'm not sure why exactly I do this. I guess I just like reliving memories over and over and I guess there's no better way to do that then to archive the music itself. Most of my early recordings were done using my very dependable Sony MZR-30 Deck. This thing has really kicked ass for me. The MD format is much more durable and I still use it to record for stealth situations or for shows that are less important to me. However, I recently decided to upgrade to a used Sony TCD-7 dat. I got it from a well known taper who really took care of this thing and boy is it sweet. Once you go DAT, you never go back ;)
| Now That you know how I tape, this is were I'll be doing it! | Well, my soundprofessionals binaural mics (after much abuse) finally quit on me. So, I figured I'd get some new mics to go w/ the new dat. One thing I knew, I wanted to get great results for just a little money. I decided to check into 3 different mics...the AKG C-1000 S, Audio Technica 822 stereo mic, and oktava MC 012's. Okay, the other two were good...especially the AT 822. The Oktava's however were the best of the three. I bought them new and they really kick ass. They have drawn favorable comparisons to neumann and schoeps mics for much less. For tapers, you can pick up brand new MC 012's at www.musiciansfriend.com for 149.99 a piece (list price is 499.99 a piece)! You may have to buy a few extra so you can find the best stereo pair and then return the others like I did. It's worth the extra time for good sound trust me. Or if you really wanna be safe just go to soundroom.com ... I've heard they sell them stereo matched at great prices also. So after that purchase, I went back to my friends at the soundprofessionals and picked up the denecke ps-2 dual phantom power supply. Okay, so i origianally wanted to pay 300 and ended up paying 450...hopefully it'll be worth it. Next buy...Zefiro Inbox. |

JVC XU-301
Well, I guess the primary reason to tape is to spread the music, so this is the way I convert it. If it's a md recording, I use my JVC XU-301 and use a digital optical conversion to my Philips CDR-760 CD recorder. This gives me a digital clone of the original recording. DAT conversions are a little more tricky. I use my JVC XD-Z700 DAT deck and send a digi optical signal to my JVC XU-301. I'll leave a minidisc on pause-record mode in order to convert the digital signal from 48 hz to 44.1 hz. I then use a digi optical cable and run that from the XU-301 to the Philips 760. Once I have one digital master on CD, I will use this in a computer Philips CD Burner using Adaptec to make clones.
