| BREAKING NEWS! LEGENDARY MOTOWN ARTIST RICK JAMES PASSES AWAY Rick James passed away August 6, 2004 at 9:20 AM in his sleep of natural causes at his Los Angeles home, per his spokesperson. He was 56 years old. He is survived by his 3 children (Ty, Rick Jr., Tazman) and 2 grandchildren (Jasmine and Charisma). Last month, he performed his hit "Fire & Desire" with Teena Marie at the BET Awards. He had finished an album and was preparing for its release next year. He was also in discussion with various studios for a movie based on his life. Born in Buffalo, NY, known as the King of Punk Funk, and the bad boy of Motown, Rick James blended the hard core funk of his predecessors James Brown, Sly Stone and George Clinton with the Rock and Roll theatrics of the Rolling Stones and Kiss. Rick James was the quintessential "Super Freak," a term he coined in the 1980's with the multi-platinum song he wrote, arranged, produced and performed sharing that same title. The single catapulted the album Street Songs to #1 on the R&B charts and #3 on the pop charts. This mega-talented, multi-Grammy and American Music Award winner played at least five different instruments and had not only sold millions himself, he wrote and produced songs for Eddie Murphy, Mary Jane Girls, The Temptations, Teena Marie and Smokey Robinson, all selling millions as well. He licensed his work for sampling by artists such as Mary J. Blige, Erykah Badu and MC Hammer, whose sample of "Super Freak" for the hit single "U Can't Touch This" made Please Hammer, Don't Hurt 'Em the biggest selling rap album in history. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society Singer Laura Branigan dies at 47 US pop star Laura Branigan, who enjoyed hits with the songs Gloria and Self Control in the early 1980s, has died of a brain aneurysm in her sleep aged 47. Branigan, also an actress, was nominated for four Grammy Awards and her Gloria single reached number two in the US chart in 1982. She complained of a headache for two weeks before she died but did not seek medical attention, her brother said. She died on Thursday at home in East Quogue, New York, her family said. Soundtracks After the success of Gloria, she also enjoyed chart hits with How Am I Supposed To Live Without You? and Solitaire in 1983, and Self Control the following year before her chart career faded. Gloria was a remake of a 1970s Italian pop song, while How Am I Supposed To Live Without You? was co-written with a then-unknown Michael Bolton. She was first choice to sing All Time High, the title tune to James Bond movie Octopussy - but eventually lost out to Rita Coolidge. But she did contribute to film soundtracks including Flashdance and Ghostbusters and duetted with David Hasselhoff on the track I Believe for the Baywatch soundtrack in 1994. Rave reviews Although she continued to release albums, her profile never returned to the level she enjoyed in the early 1980s. Also an accomplished actress, her roles included TV show Chips and films Mugsy's Girl and Backstage. One of her last appearances was playing rock legend Janis Joplin to rave reviews in New York stage musical Love, Janis. Born in Brewster, New York, Branigan had begun her career at the Academy of Dramatic Arts and became a backing singer for Leonard Cohen before getting a solo record deal. |
