Both AD&D and D&D are rpgs (role playing games). A role playing game is a game in which each player role-plays an imaginary character in an imaginary world. Role-play means that you'll act as though you were that imaginary character. You must act, think and feel like it. It's sometimes quite difficult (and funny) but that's where the fun comes from.

In AD&D and D&D, the character you create can be as unique as any other person in the real life. You can select the race, profession, and skills. The joy of roleplaying each character stands in developing each of those points, and playing your charcter accordingly. You can roleplay a tough and strong warrior, a powerful magician, or a sneaky thief.

Each of the classes has it's own charm. The fighter is strong and an excellent armsman. The mage is an expert in the magical arts. A thief is dexterous and sneaky. A priest is devoted to his deity. A paladin is a heroic and noble warrior. There are more classes available, so the fun of roleplaying each is almost unlimited!

The game is carried out by the use of several dice. The dice used are 4-sided, 6-sided, 8-sided, 10-sided, 12-sided and 20-sided. The dice are reffered to as d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20 respectively. Another die thatīs used is the 100-sided (d100), you use 2 d10, one for the tens and other for units. To do most activities you have to roll dice to determine itīs effect and/or success. Actions such as attacking, using a skill and the like, require to roll some dice, the type of dice necesary depends on the action.

The players are the ones who roleplay. There is another one who plays a very important role, the Dungeon Master (reffered to as just DM). The DM is the one who directs the game. He is the one who controls the flow of events and the outcome of the game. The DM is the one who must design the adventure world, as well as the adventure. It takes a lot of imagination to be a good DM, and requires more experience than being a player, so it is recommended that only experienced players be DMs. Your destiny and success of your character's adventuring career depend on the DM, it's good advice that you get along well with him/her too (haha).

Ever since you start roleplaying your character, he or she will become more experienced. The experience is the most wanted thing for most players. When your character becomes experienced enough, he or she will gain levels of experience, which are a measure of your charcter's toughness, power and ability. It is always a great pleasure when your character achieves a new level.

Your character will travel across monster-packed forests, climb dangerous mountains or engage in combat with powerful dragons. Learn how to roleplay well and an enormous world of fun will be available for you. Remember that imagination is the key, use it well.
