Demolition Derby 2001 August 2-5
Monroe County Fairgrounds
In 2001 the DDCB set out to expand its horizons.  We intended to participate in the Figure-8 contest which utilizes 4-cylinder cars in a race style format.

One day as Alex and DJ were having lunch on the lawn chairs, they looked up to see a beat Dodge Omni driving by, the hood tied down with rope.  It turned out that it belonged to one of DJ's co-workers and he offered her 25 dollars for it.  The Omni became property of the DDCB.

We painted, stripped, reinforced and poked holes in it for the next 2 months in preparation for the main event.  John Feltes, Alex and Andy did the major work with Erik, DJ, Miguel, Adam K, Theresa and others helping.

Pictures of the Omni are shown below. More can be seen in the
Barbecue section...
The Big Derby was not as successful as the figure-8 contest.  As Don Sullivan once said "Sometimes you win and there are other times that you just don't win."

Andy got "the 98" from Jimmy in the city.  He risked being kicked out of his Penfield home by keeping it in his father's garage and it finally ended up in storage near the Monroe County Fairgrounds.  It was simply painted black with a gold bumper and D.D.C.B. painted in gold on the rear.  John and Andy put a tremendous amount of effort into this car.

As quoted in the DDCB QUOTES section of this site
"The will to win is nothing, without the will to prepare" This principle applied to the fact that the 98 was not warmed up before its heat and as a result, almost didn't start.

Once the derby began it stood up well, but the cold engine kept shutting off.  The 98 ended up being DQ'd for not hitting(because it could not move).  A sad moment for the DDCB.

It's ok, as long as the lesson is learned and the mistake is never made again.  The 98 lived after the derby.  It was towed behind a street next to the thruway.  Here, John, Andy, and Brad "tore shit up." doing donuts and the like.  The 98 was smokin' by the end of the offroad session so we left it there.
Somehow, a bitter neighbor reported the incident to the police and Andy's mom got the call from the POPO.  Alex and Andy went and towed the car out of the field with a 4 cylinder VW GTi (whose trany broke mysteriously soon after) late at night to avoid the Police's morning deadline to remove the car.

Brad Zoller woke up the next morning to find the 98 in his driveway the next morning and we all had a good laugh.  The 98 was eventually dragged behind the Blaza' to the junkyard with a flat ti, and a 2 foot piece of loose rubber that caucofinously(loudly) slapped the pavement with each rotation of the tire.  There were also many sparks caused by the naked steel rim.

The highlite of the 98's life was the disturbance it caused while being towed to the Junkyard. With flapping tire and sparks flying, it tore past the CCR driving range, turning heads and causing many old men to shake their fists in the air.
The Big day came for the first ever figure-8 contest to be held at the Monroe County Fair.  Less than an hour before GO TIME, a severe rain storm flooded the mud track and forced the planners to cancel the event.
There were a whole lot of angry rednecks.  Refunds were given and testosterone was let loose in the form of dozens of wild men wrecklessly driving their cars all over the grass infield of the Fairgrounds.

John and Andy did not let this setback get to them.  With little fanfare, they entered the Omni in the Wayne County Fair Derby.  John proceeded to school  his opponents.  Ziggin' and zaggin' around truck ti'.  Crashin' and bashin into festivas and metros.  John won his heat vs. 7 others and then finished 3rd in the finals.

He came home with a huge trophy.  I think it might be bigger than Andys.

Update: John's trophy is not bigger than Andy's.

DJ's opinion: I think we should measure.
