Our Trip

On August 1, Rainer, Graham, and I drove to South Dakota to do some caving in Wind and Jewel Caves.  We spent three days in Wind, surveying over 800 feet of unsurveyed or virgin passage; and a day touring in Jewel Cave with members of the South Dakota grotto of the
N. S. S.

The caves are incredible.  Wind Cave has over 99 miles of passage (and we were warned not to find the magic 100th mile and scoup an American group who have been working in the cave for years -- they'll  be allowed the honour).  Jewel Cave has about 107 miles.  We also visited "Sitting Bull Crystal Caverns," a fine little cave; and did the regular tourist stuff like watching the thousands of Sturgis bound motorcycles, checking out Mt. Rushmore, and marvelling at the Mammoth dig in Hot Springs.

We cannot thank the Cave Management Specialist at Wind Cave, Rod Horrocks,  enough.  His patience, great stories, and hospitality really made our trip a memorable one.
