A number of those who are using the library have asked some questions, had problems with their setup etc. Hence we created this list for your convenience.

  • What PDA do I need?

At the moment the following PDA OS are supported.

    • Palm
    • Pocket PC
    • Epoc
    • Symbian

As most of the popular PDA's will use one of these operating systems the files will be useful on almost all PDA's.

Tomeraider has also invested in the future platform for cellular phones i.e. Symbian.  Thus in just a short while, we will be able to have the NWT on a cellular phone as the Ericsson P800 will be able to open Tomeraider files.  You can already use them on a Nokia 9210.

  •  The files I downloaded do not work on my PDA?

Ok firstly the files you downloaded are packaged with a compression facility called WinZip. This is a compression facility that is used on the internet to compress files.

You will have to uncompress the files first and then copy them to your PDA. The Winzip program is shareware, and can be obtained from http://www.winzip.com

Check the extension of the file. If the file has the extension .zip then it is still compressed.  Then the file will have the extension .tr this is the Tomeraider file that you copy to the PDA.

Thus a file it-v102.zip is a compressed file, while the it-v102.tr is the Tomeraider file.

  •  I cannot open the files on my PDA?

You would need to download and install the Tomeraider program for your PDA. This is a commercial program and is available at http://www.tomeraider.com

Once the program is installed you should be able to open the .tr files on your PDA.

Palm users need to convert the file in the Windows Tomeraider program.

  •  Why do I need to use Tomeraider?

The reason we chose to use the Tomeraider platform is because they support all of the PDA operating systems. This way we could concentrate on the development of the Library and not on the software that is used to read the library.

Also the Tomeraider program was already developed and many PDA users already are using this program for other documents.

  • Why not use a free Reader?

The reason for using the Tomeraider system is because it is not a text reader, but rather a text database.

The problem that we found with porting these publications to a reader is that a reader will open the whole publication and then only allow you to read a very small portion of it at one time.

You can understand this when you realize that the NWT has 1275 pages in the Tomeraider version and is around 2.6Mb in size.  Thus a reader will open all 1275 pages and allow you to read only one, or less on a PDA screen.

Tomeraider does not do this, it only loads a page at a time, and leaves the other on the Ram Disk.  Thus the main benefit is speed.  It opens in around 1-2 sec on a PDA compared to around 10-15 sec or longer in a reader. Also moving between the pages in a reader is also slow as it has to deal with a huge document.

On the Nokia 9210 it is even faster. It is amazing to see the IT volumes, around 2500+ pages and around 6Mb open in 1-2 sec and locate a page in about the same time.

Thus we made the decision to use the Tomeraider software, it does have a cost involved, but we have managed to arrange a 50% discount for users of the MWtlib thus the license should cost you around $7.5 for your PDA.

  •  How where these files created?

This process was a bit more time consuming than might seem. We actually extracted the text from the CD-Rom and then manually edited the files to prepare them for the Tomeraider conversion. We did some formatting and in most of the publications, we created a navigation system.

The actual conversion is very simple as Tomeraider provides a program to do it for you. Once the files are created we simply copy them to the PDA and there you have it.

Anyone can create these files on their own computer, and if you would like to know the process we have documented the process check the download page, for the process document.

  •  Why do I need to register?

Firstly we wanted to know who to send updates to, and for the Tomeraider software you would have to register to use the software.

Also you will receive a 50% discount on the Tomeraider software, once you register on our site.  We do not have any commercial kickback from this discount, it was arranged as a part of the agreement to use their software.  Much like a volume license.

  •  Why are only a few of the publications available?

This is because we are manually creating them, and due to not knowing the format that the CD-Rom, MEPS, uses to store the data directly, we have to extract the data from the CD-Rom using the Windows interface.

Thus the CTRL-C and CTRL-V keys are well worn... ;)

This is due to a setting on your Browser and not the site.

Check the security info for your browser. Make sure that you have set the User Authentication to Prompt for Username and Password.

How in Internet Explorer

  • Select the Tools Menu
  • Select Internet Options
  • Click the Security Tab
  • Click the Custom Level button
  • Scroll down to the bottom of the list
  • Set the User Authentication to Prompt for Username and Password

This will set the browser to ask you for the username and password for the site you are trying to access.  Thus when you click the download links it will popup the security window and allow you to enter the username and password.

This process is by design, as other Internet sites are doing the same, your browser is just login on for you using anonymous logins for downloading.  Now you know more about Internet Security.

This is due to the way the Palm Pilot works, You will need to convert the TR file to a PDB file that would then be copied to your Palm.

Assuming you already have the Tomeraider program installed on your palm pilot.

The first thing you need to get the files on your palm pilot is the Tomeraider for Windows program.

You can use this to open up a Tomeraider file in Windows.

  • Once you open the file
  • There is an option under the File menu for "hotsync to Palm OS".
  • Select that and perform a hotsync.
  • That will install the file to the Palm pilot.
