Love Doesn't Ask Why

Part 30

Scene: Security booth outside Dawson’s studio.

people said that together we were both sides of the same coin
that we would shine like Venus in a clear night sky
we thought our love could overcome the circumstances
but my ambition wouldn’t allow for compromise

"Look I was here about six weeks ago on business with Mr Leery." She pleaded with the security guard.

"I’m sorry miss." He told her. "But I can’t let you through without an appointment."

"It’s a personal matter with Mr Leery. Can’t you even call him and ask him if he’ll see me or even Anna his secretary?"

He looked at her for a moment before replying, "Give me a minute."

Joey smiled at him. "Thank you."

A few minutes later.

I could see in the distance all the dreams that were dear to me
and every choice I had to make left you on your own
somehow the road we started down had split us on there
too late to realise how far apart we’d grown

"I’m sorry." The guard said to her as he exited the booth. "But Mr Leery doesn’t want to see you."

"He doesn’t?" Joey asked a little disappointed. "Well can I speak to his secretary?"

"I’m afraid not. It was her that told me that Mr Leery didn’t want to talk to you."

"Oh. Sorry to bother you." She told him before walking away defeated. I’ve left it too late. He’s moving on.

Joey hailed a cab and told the driver to take her to the airport.

**********

A few minutes later.

A car pulls up to the booth and the guard comes out.

"Good afternoon, Mr Leery."

"Good afternoon, John."

"How’s production coming along?"

"It’s getting there." Dawson told him with a smile on his face.

"The wife saw your trailer last night, wants me to take her to see it." John informed Dawson.

"That’s the kind of thing we like to hear."

"Have a nice day Mr Leery."

"You too."

As Dawson drives away the security guard looks puzzled, wondering how Dawson said ‘no’ to seeing that woman if he wasn’t even in his office. He just shrugs his shoulders and walks back into the booth, it’s none of his business.

Scene: - Joey at the airport on the phone.

and how I wish (wish I)
wish I’d thought a little bit more
now shoulda, woulda, coulda
means I’m outta time (means I’m outta time)
shoulda, woulda, coulda can’t change your mind
I wonder (wonder)
wonder what I’m gonna do
shoulda, woulda, coulda are the last words of a fool

"Do you know why he wouldn’t speak to me or see me?" Joey said into her phone as she sat waiting on her flight to be called. "...He never said anything!...My flight leaves in thirty minutes...I really had to see him James. What I wanted to say to him had to be said face to face...Look you don’t have to tell him anything, I was just wanting to know why he wouldn’t see me. I didn’t exactly expect him to welcome me with open arms but I never expected him not to see me...so you’ll call me on my cell? Thanks James."

people ask how it feels
to live the kinda life others dream about
I tell them
everybody got to face their highs and their lows

As Joey hung up her cellphone she couldn’t help bit see the irony to all this.

Ironic is now my new middle name it seems. I was here before at this very gate, unsure of what I wanted. Not sure if I wanted him to stop me leaving and he was too late. And now...? Now I want to be stopped and he won’t see me.

**********

Scene: - Twenty-eight minutes later the airport.

and in my life there’s a love that I put aside
‘coz I was busy loving something else
and so for every little thing you hold onto
got to let something else go

Joey glanced at her watch again, then at her cellphone. Why hasn’t James called? He’s probably thought that it would be better if I didn’t know why Dawson won’t see me.

Just then there was an announcement over the PA system. "This is a final call for all passengers wishing to fly on flight AA427 to Boston. Any passengers awaiting this flight should board now."

how I wish I
wish I’d thought a little bit more (oh a little more)
now shoulda, woulda, coulda
means I’m outta time (I’m outta time)
shoulda, woulda, coulda can’t change your mind
I wonder (said I wonder)
wonder what I’m gonna do (I wonder what I’m gonna)
shoulda, woulda, coulda are the last words of a fool

Joey stood up with her bag and walked over to the gate to board. He won’t stop me this time. It’s over...for good. She thought to herself as she waited to hand her ticket over. Goodbye Dawson, I’ll always love you. It’s just a pity I couldn’t tell you. She started to feel sick again, as the tears started to well in her eyes. Then she handed over her ticket and walks through the gate.

Scene: - The airport. A few minutes later.

if I would now forsake
the opportunities of fate
I know I’m right where I belong
but sometimes when I’m not that strong

Dawson runs through the airport and gets to the gate that Joey’s plane just left from.

Well if this isn’t deja vu....same gate, same ending. He was mentally cursing Anna, why hadn’t she told him about Joey being in LA?

I wish I
wish I’d thought a little bit more (yeah I wonder said I wonder)
now shoulda, woulda, coulda
means I’m outta time (oh outta time)
shoulda, woulda, coulda can’t change your mind
I wonder (said I wonder)
wonder what I’m gonna do shoulda, woulda, coulda are the last words of a fool

She said that she thought that it would be best for me if I didn’t see her. She didn’t want me to get hurt again. But it must have been important if Joey flew out here.

"This is a passenger announcement. All passengers traveling on flight AA439 to Seattle, this flight is ready for boarding."

She’s gone again and thinks that I don’t love her...but I do. Dawson sits down, watching the planes taxi down the runway. The enormity of the situation finally hitting him. Oh God, she’s gone. Why was she going to Boston? Maybe she’s going to Capeside.

and how I wish I
wish I’d thought a little bit more
now shoulda, woulda, coulda
means I’m outta time
shoulda, woulda, coulda can’t change your mind
I wonder
(shoulda, woulda, coulda means I’m outta time)
wonder what I’m gonna do

shoulda, woulda, coulda can’t change your mind
shoulda, woulda, coulda means I’m outta time
shoulda, woulda, coulda can’t change your mind
can’t change your mind
** shoulda, woulda, coulda - beverley knight **

Should I go after her? Should I try and find out why she had to see me? Find out once and for all where we stand. It’s time that I start living my life, not holding on to the past."

He then puts his head in his hands and slumps in the chair.
