--------------------

Scene: - Hospital Cafeteria - three days later. Pacey is sitting talking to Mairi who is a doctor on the ward that Pacey is training on.

MAIRI: "So how have things been?"

PACEY: "I don’t know. She just doesn’t seem like her normal self."

MAIRI: "Have you asked her if anything is wrong?"

PACEY: "She says she’s just stressed with work but . . . "

MAIRI: "But you don’t buy it, do you?"

PACEY: "No, it just seems as though she’s avoiding me lately, these past few days. I walk in a room and she walks out."

MAIRI: "So what do you think is wrong with her?"

PACEY: "I don’t want to think about it."

MAIRI: "What?"

PACEY: "When she was in LA. She met up with an old friend of hers. He used to be an old friend of mine too."

MAIRI: "Used to be?"

PACEY: "We where best friends, Me and Dawson, Joey and Dawson. But back then Joey and I where mortal enemies. They dated, split, dated, and split again. About a year later I’ve fallen for Joey, kissed her and started dating her. He’s still in love with her and I’ve lost my best friend."

MAIRI: "Oh. Do you think something happened while she was in LA?"

PACEY: "Now I do."

MAIRI: "You have to talk to her."

PACEY: "I can’t. I’m afraid that she’ll tell me something that I don’t want to hear. And it’s not the first time that something like this happened. He used to date my sister, Gretchen. They split about two months after Joey and I left Capeside. I didn’t tell her until a few months later because I thought that if she knew she would have left me for him. And the funny thing is she loves me and not him but I just couldn’t stop thinking that she still wanted him deep down. I know I know it sounds stupid but whenever it came to Dawson I just had this whole insecurity complex. I just don’t think that I could handle it if something is wrong. Besides she’s been back from LA for almost a month."

I know they say that if you love somebody
you should set them free (so they say)

Scene: - Dawson’s apartment - the same night. Dawson and James are sitting in the living room, having a few drinks.

but it sure is hard to do, it sure is hard to do
and I know they say if they don’t come back again
that it’s meant to be (so they say)
but these words ain’t pulling me through
cause I’m still in love with you
and I spend each day here waiting for a miracle
but it’s just you and me going through the mill
climbing up the hill

this is the long goodbye
somebody tell me why
two lovers in love can’t make it
just what kind of love keeps breaking our hearts
no matter how hard I try
you’re gonna make me cry
come on baby it’s over let’s face it
all that’s happening here is the long goodbye

JAMES: "I have one question for you Dawson."

DAWSON: "What’s that?"

JAMES: "Did you really expect her to stay in LA with you?"

DAWSON: "I don’t know." He stops and thinks for a moment and then smile. "I think all rational thought just flew out the window when we kissed. I just never wanted to think about her going back to Chicago. I just didn’t allow myself to consider it as an option."

JAMES: "So you where in denial, there’s nothing wrong with that."

DAWSON (laughs) : "Hmm. Do you know that there was a time when I thought that all soulmates ended up together? Some would say that my perpetual optimism was one of my biggest flaws. But sometimes optimism can be enough to get you through the day. And me being me, I always held on to this hope that someday we’d get our chance. Have you ever had that feeling were you think time is never on your side?"

JAMES: "Trust me I do."

DAWSON: "It’s like we’re together, oh no we’re not. Then together again and so on. I think I’ve started to realise that all soulmates don’t always end up together. Classic example! Ally McBeal...Billy dies."

JAMES: "But not before telling Ally how he felt and deep down how he really had envisioned their life together. And another thing Dawson, since when was Ally McBeal a classic??"

DAWSON: "Okay you have a point."

JAMES: "And here’s another one. What if all soulmates have to go through tests to see if they really should be together??"

sometimes I ask my heart did we really
give our love a chance (just one more chance)
and I know without a doubt that we turned it inside out
and if we walked away
it would make more sense only self defense
but it tears me up inside
just to think we still could try

the song fades.
*the long goodbye - ronan keating*

DAWSON: "Okay now that’s just plain cruel."

JAMES: "Sometimes life can seem cruel."

DAWSON: "Next you’ll be spouting ‘that which doesn’t kill us makes us strong’!"

JAMES: (laughing) "You said it, not me."

DAWSON: "We’re a depressing bunch aren’t we?"

JAMES: "Do you know what I can’t believe?"

DAWSON: "What?"

JAMES: "I can’t believe that you never told me about Joey before. I’ve known you for seven years and nothing. Let me tell you it’s a sad day when Anna comes to me for information and she knows more than I do."

DAWSON: "She only knows that because my mother had told her. And I just didn’t want to talk about it."
