Part 20

Scene: - Dawson’s apartment, Dawson’s room. Three weeks later.
Dawson and Joey are in his bed under the covers. Joey is lying down and Dawson is lying on his side, with his upper body hovering slightly over hers.
here’s how it goes
if you feel like leaving
JOEY: "Dawson...Dawson..." He wasn’t listening, he was too busy kissing a trail down her neck. Stopping at her clavicle, at a sensitive spot and suckling on it. "Oh I give up."
DAWSON: "Good, because I was trying to concentrate and you were putting me off."
JOEY (she now has her hands on either side of his face) : "Dawson we shouldn’t be doing this."
DAWSON: "Excuse me."
She pushes him away and sits up pulling the duvet up to cover her.
JOEY: "We shouldn’t be doing this. This shouldn’t be happening. I know I said this last night. When we where kissing in your living room and we didn’t stop, but we have to draw the line somewhere. I’m going back to Chicago in a few days. We have to stop this Dawson."
DAWSON: "You also said that three weeks ago."
JOEY: "I know."
DAWSON: "And almost every night since then."
JOEY: "Dawson please, don’t make this any harder than it has to be. I’m sorry. I led you on."
DAWSON: "No you didn’t. I did this completely voluntarily. You didn’t lead me anywhere."
JOEY: "Yes I did."
so if you go
DAWSON: "Joey the only thing that you have to do to lead me on is breathe."
She gets up and starts to get dressed.
JOEY: "I should go."
Dawson also gets out of bed, grabs his bathrobe and goes into the hallway.
Once she’s dressed she goes into the kitchen to see Dawson.
JOEY: "Dawson, I’m sorry."
DAWSON: "Don’t be, I’m a big boy now. I knew fine well what I was doing. What I was getting involved in. It was inevitable, you’re leaving. Going back to..." He can’t bring himself to say it.

JOEY: "So I’ll see you tomorrow?"
DAWSON: "Yeah."
JOEY: "Everything should be running on time. You should be able to start filming on the new set in a day or two. I’ll see you later."
She starts to walk out of the kitchen but Dawson stands in front of her, places one hand on her waist and the other on her cheek. He then lowers his head and kisses her. She responds to the kiss and caresses his cheek with one of her hands and just as she is getting into the kiss he breaks away from her. He turns, walks out of the kitchen and into the hallway.
DAWSON (calling from the hallway) : "I’ll see you tomorrow Jo."

here’s how it goes
Dawson thinking as she leaves.
DAWSON: "Everything isn’t running on time. I’m not with you. I’m not the one who gets to share everything with you. I’m not the one who put that ring on your finger. I’m not the one who’ll get to marry you. I’m not the one who’ll be the father of your children. I’m not the one who gets to be with you."
all it takes is some trying.
Joey outside in her car. She is sitting leaning her head back against the head rest.
JOEY: "Oh God, why did I do this? Why did I let this happen? Oh I know fine well why I let this happen. It was because over the past few weeks my insides have gone to mush. As soon as we had started kissing, my voice of reason had kicked in. ‘Dawson we shouldn’t be doing this’. His reply had been ‘mmhm I know’. But I hadn’t stopped kissing him and he hadn’t stopped kissing me either. And if he’d have tried to stop...well I wouldn’t have let him stop."

"What was it that people said. Oh yes, ‘you can find someone and live your life, put an old memory out of your mind, but the heart...it never forgets’. Well it was true. Once she had had time to heal her wounds she’d find herself replaying that night over and over again. She didn’t have to now. In the past three weeks they had slept together nearly every night. Hell they had a better sex life than she and Pacey had."

She couldn’t even remember the last time that she had slept in bed at the same time as Pacey. His hours at work had been all over the place and so was his sleep pattern. Why had Dawson kissed me before I had left? I want to go back in there and kiss him again. And again and again. I think that the best thing for me to do is to go back to the hotel and have a cold shower. Get him out of my head."

Joey just sat there in the car for a moment longer and then she started the engine. And as the car drives off, the scene fades with the song.
