Scene: - New York - Friday afternoon into Friday evening.
Scene: - Saturday morning into Saturday afternoon.
Saturday Night - Restaurant

Seating arrangements. Joey is sitting between Jack and Pacey, and across from Dawson, While Dawson is sitting between Andie and Jen and across from Joey. Jen is facing Jack, so Andie is facing Pacey. Get it? Got it? Good!!

JOEY: “Ah, before anyone decided to jump in and propose a toast there’s something that I wanted to say. For sometime now I’ve had a little bit of a secret, well it isn’t exactly little. Oh boy, this is harder than I thought it would be to say. For as long as I can remember, you lot have been a big part of my life, some more than others. All in different ways. And because of this I can’t think of better people to share this moment with. I didn’t go to the bathroom, I went to make our waiter a coconspirator in this. As I have sat with you all tonight one question has played it’s way through my head all night, but not just tonight. But for the past month or so. That question is going to change my life forever, no matter what the answer is. I’m starting to ramble, so I better just get to the point, ‘coz yes there is a point. I think the best thing to do is to just come out with it. I think that you will all be able to see from looking at Dawson’s glass what that question is going to be. (In the bottom of Dawson’s glass is a simple gold band with a small peridot stone). I’ve known you almost my entire life and although we have had our moments, both good and bad. I think that is safe to say that the good out-weighs the bad. I know that you love me and well if I didn’t love you then I wouldn’t be doing this. So here goes, Dawson Leery, will you marry me??”

JOEY: “I thought that this was the next step for us, obviously I was wrong”. And she leaves.
Cut to New York street. - Jack and Jen have caught up with Joey.

JEN: “Joey, are you okay?”
Back to the restaurant.

DAWSON: “The reason that I didn’t answer her was because at the time I was kinda shocked that SHE had asked ME to marry her and because for all of the time that we have been seeing each other we never once talked about this. I was in shock Pace, if we had spoke about this type of thing before then I probably would have been okay. The reason why I let her leave and why I didn’t follow her was because I didn’t have an answer to her question and I still don’t. That plus the fact that she wouldn’t have really wanted to hear the ‘ I’ll think about it’ or the ‘No’.”
Cut to Joey, Jen and Jack.
sitting there all alone
JOEY: “At this moment Jack, I really don’t know if it would be the end for us. I just don’t know.”
Cut to Pacey and Dawson walking in Central Park.

PACEY: “So are things any clearer yet”??

DAWSON: “The thing that made this relationship different was that no one knew about it. It was never a big talking point with you lot, not like the last time.”
DAWSON: “How am I in denial?”

We then see various scenes.

The next scene is of Dawson and Pacey walking out of Central Park and down a street towards there hotel.

Then we see various shots of Jen and Andie talking.

The scene goes back to Dawson and Pacey. This time they enter the hotel and then we see them exit the elevator. As Dawson is about to enter their room he pauses, and looks at the door down the hall. Joey’s room. He then enters the room and closes the door.

We then see Joey in bed unable to sleep and then Dawson in his bed unable to sleep. The scene then fades.
The next day - New York City
Early morning - Central Park
Scene: - Dawson, Jack and Pacey’s room.
Scene: - Andie, Jen and Joey’s room.
Joey is in the bathroom getting ready and Andie has just finished getting dressed.
my hands are tied
We see Dawson again walking down a street that is just around the corner from the hotel that they have been staying in.
And you give yourself away
Joey walks outside to get a cab. And gets one straight away. She tells the driver “JFK International Airport please.”

Then we see Dawson walk around the corner just as the cab drives away from the front of the hotel. He doesn’t see Joey in the taxi and she hasn’t seen Dawson.

The next scene shows Dawson walking up to a door and knocking on it, but there is no answer. He then walks down the hall to the room that he is sharing with Pacey and Jack. He enters the room to find that Andie and Jen are also there.
PACEY: “Hey D-man were have you been?”

We see various scenes. The airport. Checking into their hotel. Then seeing some of the sights. St. Patrick’s. The empire state building. Then some late night shopping.
Some more sight seeing. The Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island. Some more shopping. Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s. Walking through Central Park.

I can’t go on another day, just hear me when I say
Everyone had just finished their meal and they had decided to order some champagne. Joey excuses herself to go to the bathroom, but really she has gone to speak to the waiter that took their order. We don’t hear the conversation, but see Joey handing a small box to the waiter. The waiter seems to agree with whatever Joey is saying. She then goes back to her seat. The waiter comes over with their glasses of champagne. No one seems to notice the ring in the bottom of one of the glasses. She then starts to speak.

Jack, Jen , Pacey and even Dawson are all stunned. Andie is the only one who has any idea that this would be coming soon. Thirty seconds go by and Dawson hasn’t said anything, neither has anyone else. Joey sees this as a bad sign, and gets up to leave.

After another minute has passed Dawson finally says something.
DAWSON: “Jen, Jack could you go see that she is okay.”
JEN: “Sure.”
Jack and Jen leave.
PACEY: “Well D-man, I must say we were all a little shocked by that, even you had no idea that was coming. Weren’t we shocked Andie??”
Andie doesn’t say anything.
PACEY: “You knew about this??”
ANDIE: “I didn’t know about what was going to happen tonight.”
PACEY: (to Andie) “How long have you known??” (to Dawson) “How long has she known??”
DAWSON: “For just over two years.”
PACEY: “Okay, question one has been answered. And just how long have you two been going out for?”
DAWSON: “For just under two and a half years.”
PACEY: “Finally feel like I’m getting a little info. Now for the biggie. Why didn’t you answer her? Why didn’t you say ‘Yes’? And more importantly why did you let her leave and why didn’t you follow her??”

JACK: “What kind of question is that Jen? Of course she’s not okay.”
JEN: “Okay, better question, what just happened in there? And since when have you and Dawson been an item??”
JOEY: “Well for just under two and a half years Dawson and I have been a couple. And I thought that it was time to take our relationship to the next level. So I proposed to him and judging from his reaction, he doesn’t feel the same.“
JACK: “What reaction Joey? You barely gave him time to process the question, let alone assemble an answer.”
JOEY: “Really Jack, then why am I here having this conversation with you instead of with him?? Why isn’t he here with me?? Why isn’t he telling me that we both want the same thing and that maybe, just maybe I beat him to it. That I was right, this IS the next step for us.”
JACK: “Honestly Joey, I couldn’t tell you why he isn’t here. Maybe he just needs time to think about it.”
JOEY: “If that was what he wanted then he could have just said ‘ Gee Joey, can I think about it’? ”
JEN: “Joey you know Dawson better than anyone, he probably just froze.”
JOEY: “Depends on what you mean by that, but that normally means that he has gone into ‘self analysing’ mode.”
JACK: “I know that this might not be the best time to talk about this, but what if he is thinking about it and he tells you the answer is ‘No’. Will that be the end for you two??”

DAWSON: “At this moment Andie, I really don’t know.”
They pay the bill and Dawson decides that he wants to go for a walk. Pacey wants to go with him, so they walk Andie back to the hotel.

watching the world go by
brings tears to her eyes
JEN: “I think that maybe now would be a good time to head back to the hotel.”
JACK: “Jen’s right, You’ll probably feel better in the morning!”
JOEY: “Somehow I don’t think that I’m going to get much sleep.”
The head back to the hotel. Once in the girls room Joey goes to have a bath and Jen and Andie discuss what happened. Andie fills Jen in on the fact that she has known about the relationship for just over two years and that Dawson doesn’t know what his answer is going to be. Jen tells Andie that Joey doesn’t know what will happen to their relationship if the answer is ‘No’.

DAWSON: “Not really. All I can think about is that we broke up twice before”.
PACEY: “Dawson, both of those times you were sixteen year olds, trying to be twenty-one”.
DAWSON: “It still happened”.
PACEY: “Ah, but things are different now, you are both twenty-one now and you seem to forget that this relationship has lasted for over two years”.

PACEY: “That’s just a cop out and you know it. It has nothing to do with who does and doesn’t know about the relationship, that’s like saying you two only broke up because we all knew about the relationship years ago. And that Jack only kissed Joey because she was seeing you. And if that was the case then how come that didn’t apply to Joey and me. We didn’t split because everyone knew about our relationship.”
DAWSON: “I don’t know, it’s just different.”
PACEY: “You seem to forget that I’ve known you almost forever and that I can tell when you’re trying to kid yourself. Lets face it man, your in denial.”

DAWSON: “And just what is that Pacey??”
PACEY: “Well Dawson, it’s one of two things. Either you are scared because neither of you have ever discussed getting this far and marriage never quite seemed like an option.”

DAWSON: “What if it’s both.”
PACEY: “As I said, you have to sort it. Because if you say no to her then I don’t think I can really see a way for you two to go on. And you shouldn’t just say yes because it may be over, you just say it, if it’s what you want”.

The camera pans across a bathroom. We then see Joey in the bath. Her face tear stained.

Dawson is walking through Central Park. Obviously still thinking about the question.
Jack and Pacey have just finished getting ready when there is a knock at the door. Jack goes to answer it.
JACK: “Hey Jen, how are you this morning?”
JEN: “I’m fine.”
JACK: “Andie?”
JEN: “She’s fine too and before you ask Joey’s not great but she’s getting there.”
PACEY: “Has she said much?”
JEN: “Not about Dawson, I don’t think she can bring herself to say his name at the moment. But I can tell that she’s thinking about him. About how this is going to somehow change their relationship. About how she never saw this part coming and more than anything I think she’s thinking of what it will be like when she has to face him. Speaking of, were is Dawson??”
PACEY: “He’s not here.”
JEN: “I can see that. Where is he??”
JACK: “We don’t know, he wasn’t here when we got up about an hour ago.”
JEN: “Pacey I know that you went for a walk with Dawson after you brought Andie back to the hotel last night, but when did you two get back ??”
PACEY: “We got in at about two in the morning”.
JEN: “Did he say anything??”
PACEY: “Well if by that you mean did he have an answer, then no he didn’t. I think that more than anything he’s just scared.”
JACK: “Of what”??
PACEY: “They never discussed this, they never once talked about getting married, not since we were in high school anyway.”
JACK: “Then I guess that you could say he was shocked.”
JEN: “Talk about an understatement!”
JACK: “Where do you think he went??”
PACEY: “He probably went for a walk to think some more.”

JOEY: “I’ll be dressed in about five minutes. If you want to go get Jen you can, I’ll meet you in the lobby.”

Just after Andie leaves the room Joey walks out of the bathroom with the rucksack that she had brought that contained all of her clothes. She is leaving. She needs time to think. Can she stay with Dawson if they don’t want the same thing?
She gets in the elevator and goes to the reception desk to hand back her key and leave the note she has written for Andie and Jen.

DAWSON: “Well I didn’t see her when I came in.”
