RR Signal Trains, Trains, Trains RR Signal

Railfanning Atlanta, GA - Some of my favorite rail places from my days in Atlanta.

(139k) Amtrak's southbound Crescent, led by #818, passing through Norcross, GA, one fine morning.

(150k) Two NS trains lined up nicely for this shot. On the right is the Duluth local, (described in more detail in my railfanning notes switching the concrete plant; on the left is a rail transport train, in motion at perhaps 35mph. I was right proud to have gotten the shot with them lined up as nicely as they were. <brag, brag>

(110k) This is one of Georgia Northeastern's locomotives.

(59k) A CSX intermodal train coming into Smyrna, GA, near Atlanta Rd.

Okay, so here are maps taken from Microsoft's Train Simulator, v1.0, captured from the Activity Editor, showing all of the switches of Marias Pass, and indicating whether the switches are manual or automatic. Manual switches maybe thrown by the user during any activity; automatic switches are controlled by the sim, and the activity designer (that's you) must set paths through the switches to get them to be set properly. For "point-a-to-point-b" activities, this is normal and not a problem.

For switching activities (which I tend to think are more challenging and hence more fun), this means that to setout cars into a siding that's accessed through an automatic switch, the activity designer (that's you, again) must reverse a path, take the "other" route into the siding, and reverse again to get back out. This also means that if you're near another siding that the activity user can switch, you need to let the user know which to do first, or you run the risk of having the sim out of skew and unplayable (i.e. red signals, switches set against the player, etc.)

Anyway, in order from west to east, (detouring south from Columbia Falls to highlight Kalispell), here are the maps, (they're also uploaded into the files area on www.train-sim.com ):
