For switching activities (which I tend to think are more challenging and hence more fun), this means that to setout cars into a siding that's accessed through an automatic switch, the activity designer (that's you, again) must reverse a path, take the "other" route into the siding, and reverse again to get back out. This also means that if you're near another siding that the activity user can switch, you need to let the user know which to do first, or you run the risk of having the sim out of skew and unplayable (i.e. red signals, switches set against the player, etc.)
