Carlito Pizarras is known as the "Tarsier man." He earned that title by being a champion for tarsiers when no one else really cared. Carlito (or Lito as he is known to his friends) has been keeping and raising tarsiers in captivity for over 30 years and is widely believed to be the only individual to have successfully bred tarsiers in captivity despite the efforts of zoos and primate centers around the world.
As the Philippine tarsier becomes more and more endangered due to habitat loss and exotic predators like house cats, captive breeding becomes more and more important in the conservation of this unique species. A species which has become the totem for an entire island and a major draw to the tourism industry. |
