| Mike Poole (DJ Judge-Mental) DJ'ing CV / November 2001 Personal Details Name: Michael Anthony Poole Stagename: Judge-Mental / DJ Map Date of Birth: 14 January 1976 Email: [email protected] Country of Birth: South Africa Country of Residence: South Africa Scene Involvement: I started off going to Deviate in Loop Street in Cape Town and, that is where my whole DJ career began. I fell in love with the place immediately! So much so that I started doing lights for the club after one of my other DJ buddies (Easy G) quit. That is when I met Greg from there as well. I must say that he definitely pushed me and all my potential to greater heights. In the early years, we played alot together in clubs like Boilerroom, Loft, G-Spot and many more.... I first started playing trance, then all the old classics from Deviate days. Next, I even delved around with gabba, followed by more house orientated tracks like: Advances - Suggestive (which is also my first tune I bought), Dreams - Quench and Alex Party - Read my lips. It is around this time I got a bit confused with the styles and what to play, but then..... Something happened!! And boy did it! I discovered my calling : Happy hardcore (In the earlier days it was more break-beat orientated) And so I started collecting and spinning these tunes, which I loved, and so did many people that heard me. After that came old skool, which is basically as raw as you can get. Full of breaks, beeps, samples and bleeps. The last two styles have stuck with me for always : Happy hardcore and Old skool. Only problem was it was very hard to find tunes down in South Africa, what with the scene going so house orientated. But I stuck with it, through all the slanders and getting mocked by others. Has it paid off? Well honestly I think it has, because I am definitely unique! My sets were getting fewer though because of my stubbornness and refusing to change. It is only this year that it all took another turn, and opened my selfish mind. All this thanks to a dear mate, DJ Syntrax. He showed me that if I wanted more sets, I would have to adapt or die. Now... I have spent an awful alot of money and sweat on my records, and I was not about to just hand them over to the local dump. So I made a choice, a difficult one, and started buying hard house and hard trance. records. And Syntrax was right! I started getting more sets and more exposure. My name appeared on more flyers, which is always good. So my climb to the top has only just begun now. All the other years were just walking to the great hill to be scaled. A great big thank you to all who helped me get where I am today. I may change my style, but I know where my roots are: Deviate, you will never be forgotten! BIG UP!!!!!! I knew right then that it was something that I really wanted to do, and so I started building up a decent vinyl collection. I would like to continue my involvement in the scene so that I can share a unique style of music with the people. In the near future I would like to be producing my own music. |
