Warm Up America! Baby Afghan Contest

Warm Up America! logo

Michael's afghan project sheet

My local Michael's craft store had a whole stack of their project sheets for knitting or crocheting 49" x 63" afghans which was used to generate donations for Warm Up America! last Christmas. This is a larger blanket, but you use the directions and make adjustments. They gave me a stack that I could use to give out through my Website. If you would like a copy of this project sheet, just send me a self addressed stamped envelope, and I'll make sure it gets to you. Email me for the address. Or, you can get the instructions online at Michaels.com.

Warm Up America! is a charity group that will accept 7" by 9" rectangles, knitted or crocheted, or an entire afghan out of 49 sections, to give them to American Red Cross Chapters around the country and to dozens of facilities that provide services to children and adults in need. Their definition of an afghan: "resembles a patchwork quilt of many textures and colors".

I originally added this web page because Jo-Anns teamed up with WUA to sponsor a contest. Unfortunately, I'm having trouble finding out if it's still in progress. So, for now, know that they were accepting afghan's for the contest at the address below.

All entries in the Jo-Ann contest will be donated to Warm Up America! to keep little ones in need warm this winter. I'm not sure of the exact completion date as I can't get a straight answer from Jo-Ann's Website. or customer service phone center, but the winner's will be announced in the Spring 2003 issue of their magazine, JO-Ann etc...

Mail entries to: JO-Ann etc... Magazine, Warm Up America!, Baby Afghan Contest, 233 Spring St., 8th Floor, New York, NY, 10013

The Craft Yarn Council, who sponsors the Warm Up America! project, has free projects as well as lessons on how to crochet and knit on their Website. So, if you want to learn sooner than I can get my how to's up on DIYing, and you don't mind suffering the colorful instruction... head on over that way.
