Where did the name "Dixie" come from?

NOBODY KNOWS.

Here are some possibilities I've heard tell of:

"Dixie" derives from "dix", French for ten. "DIX" was printed on ten dollar notes by the Citizens Bank of Louisiana before the War Between the States.

"Dixie" popped up overnight when the lady wrote the song "Dixie". It came to her in dreams and portents.

"Dixie" was the name of a slave character in a play, which the author of the song "Dixie" saw, and which inspired him to write the song Dixie.

"Dixie" was a mythical slaveowner invented by slave songsters. They sang about "Dixie's", where slaves were treated well.

"Dixie" is derived from the Mason-Dixon line. I guess that means that the Yankees are in Masieland.
