| Saxon Reef |
| Another popual spot used by several dive operators, this is an excellent back reef with several night or day dives. They are combined here into one mega site. Snorkwling anywhere is on the shallow bommie tops, reef edge and reeftop is excellent. The reeftop is exposed to to an supreme low tides and a wall drops down to 8m onto a white sand floor. As you move out from the wall large patches of staghorn coral thickets and small bommies are interpersed with large single and mixed spcies of bommies.Swim-throughs and gullies are scattered throughout the area. Your guide should should help you decide the best sites to explore. There is no need to go beyond the 18m, as the rubble sand few coral patches into significance when compared to life up the slope. Each bommie has its own special feature and life associated with it - giant clams, anemones coral-limorpharians, pipe fish, lion fishand moray eels. Occasionally a turtle will cruise by, as will large cod and the ever present schools of damsels and fusiliers. Common passing pelagics include tuna, mackerel, trevally and baracuda. Thw white sandy floor reflects light and on a sunny day, turns the whole area into a classic magic reef scene. Wnd angle and macro photography work well, but watch out for the sand glare effect.Giant clams are great subjects. Notice nesting titan triigar fish as they protect their "bomb crater" nests with crash-tackeling effectivness. |
