My 1981 Harley-Davidson Sturgis

This bike has a unique history to it. Her name is Mary-Lou. A good bud of mine purchased her brand new on base in Germany in 1981. He put many miles on her all over Europe (Germany, Austria, etc.). He brought her back to Raleigh, NC when he came home. After many happy miles of riding (some not so happy - a couple of wrecks and rebuilds), he sold her to a friend somewhere around 1989. A couple of years later, this friend needed cash, so my bud bought the bike back. So he is now the first and third owner!!

I helped him bring the bike into the living room, and the teardown process had begun! She had about 29,000 miles on her, and was in need of some attention. He tore her down to nuts and bolts!! New 5 gallon tanks, new bobbed rear fender, new gunfighter seat, new pistons (stock size) - domed for a little extra compression, rings, bearings, etc. A couple of chromed items, but not too many! Don't want to look like a RUB!!! A kick-ass custom hand/airbrush paint job, and many layers of clear coat. This bike looks KILLER!

I became the fourth owner middle of 97. I rebuilt the tranny, added a couple of chrome and stainless parts, new tires, but nothing serious. This bike Kicks Ass! It definately turns heads, and the Sturgis is so rare. I would like to go back to the stock black and orange color scheme, keeping with heritage and all, but don't want to touch the existing paint job!!

Anyways, that's enough of the history lesson, I hope to have newer and better pictures as the weather warms up!

Later!
RD
