DISTRICT FORUM

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

This month, Lion Wayne Hushagen and myself in cooperation with Habitat for Humanity will be completing an application for a LCIF Grant for the construction of a Habitat for Humanity residence for a family in Edmonton. In this program the Lions Clubs will be responsible for 12.5% of the cost of the house, Habitat for Humanity will be responsible for 12.5% of the cost of the house, for the land, and for qualifying the family for the project. Based on cost estimates provided by Habitat for Humanity, the cost of the construction of the house will be approximately $100,000.00. Therefore, the Lions Clubs will be responsible for approximately $12,500.00. The Lions Clubs are also responsible for providing volunteer labour during the construction of the home. It is my objective to get many Clubs involved both to reduce the cost to each Club and to increase the pool of potential volunteers. Several Clubs have already agreed to contribute funds and to volunteer for the construction of residence and the Cabinet has endorsed the application to Lions Clubs International, so we are proceeding with the application. If your Club would like to get involved please contact either Lion Wayne Hushagen at home at [780] 459-1134 or fax 459-1328 or myself at work [780] 432-9386, home 424-6927, fax 432-0894, or email [email protected].

LIONS QUEST
Main Goals

• To help young people develop positive social behaviours, such as self-discipline, responsibility, good judgement and the ability to get along with others.

• To help young people develop strong commitments to their families, schools, positive peers and communities, including a commitment to lead healthy, drug-free lives.

Lions-Quest Canada is a charitable organization based in Waterloo, Ontario. Lions-Quest Canada represents the Canadian partnership between Lions Clubs International and Quest International. Lions Clubs International has provided major funding through its Foundation for the development of the Skills programs. Quest International reaches more than three million children each year, all over the world, with programs and services to promote positive youth development.

Lions, Lioness and Leo Clubs across Alberta have been instrumental in supporting Lions-Quest Programs in our schools. With their support, coordination and fund raising efforts the Lions have helped to train over 11,000 educators at Lions-Quest workshops in Alberta.

The Lions of Alberta were awarded the "Friends of Education" award from the Alberta School Boards Association. This award is presented annually to two organizations that have demonstrated a commitment to the improvement of education.

Over 85% of Alberta Lions Clubs have contributed to Lions-Quest in the past three years. With the assistance of the LCIF Grant, along with club support, we are continuing to expand the program Thank you to all Clubs for your support and we look forward to your continuing support.
