From the Governor's Desk

Sharing and caring..these words or derivatives of them like share and care are words that have been used by many at many times. It is interesting how many ways I see them used in conjunction with our work as Lions. This month many Lions will be participating in Lions Candy Day. Lions will be "sharing" their candy, free of charge with their community, showing them one of the many ways they "care" for the vision and hearing impaired. In return, we hope these individuals will share a dollar or two of theirs with us because they too "care" about projects Lions support.

Speaking of projects that your Foundation supports, this years Board of Trustees (which includes this Governor) unanimously voted to increase this years budget for the Foundation by $30,000. This increase will be primarily used to increase the number of Low Vision screenings conducted this year. However, this increase has to be raised for the screenings to be a reality. One way of doing this would be to see an increase in the amount each club sends to the Foundation from this years Candy Day collections. I ask that your club considers increasing the "share" that you give to the Foundation this year because you too "care" about the kids that will benefit from your club's generosity. I hope everyone has a successful and safe Candy Day.

"We Serve" because we care! Governor Jim Hall

“Leadership”-Planning for a Successful Lion Experience"

You are a Lion in a Leadership role, or you would probably not be reading this article on Leadership. Busy with family and/or job responsibilities you need a strategy to succeed in life. One widely successful strategy is:

  • Set your goals.
  • Establish priorities.
  • Work out plans to reach your goals.
  • Pay attention to your conscience or that ‘higher power’ that guides you.”LDSP-250 500 10-97

The subject of planning is too broad to be covered in one short article. So, you’re getting the What Goes Into A GOOD Plan part of the subject. All plans, whether for Lions or for launching a spacecraft, have the following elements.

  • The goal. What do ‘U’ want to accomplish? (Must be obtainable.)
  • The dates you will start and reach your goal. (Primes our commitment.)
  • The tasks necessary to reach your goal. (List in chronological order, with start & complete dates. Only way to know what the project really requires.)
  • Required resources. (Who & what do you need?)
  • Budget. (Plan on the high side. Don’t do wishful thinking. Think of everything!)
  • List anticipated problems & their likely solutions. (Tell your fellow Lions. Essential.)
  • Signs of Progress. (Monitor progress regularly. Spot & correct trouble early.)
  • Evaluate the End Result. (How successful? How can we improve? What went wrong? Why?)

Will these eight make you a better leader? If you make ‘planning’ part of your leadership style and you use these steps, YES! Ask yourself this question: “Don’t I look at a good road map when I start out on a trip to an unfamiliar place?” Doing so will probably eliminates some wasted time on a wrong road. This is what a PLAN can do for your Lions activity.

Remember: Use your Zone Chairman and/or District 1-CN Cabinet Member

USED EYEGLASS COLLECTION

Visually handicapped people all over the world benefit, free of charge, from the Used Eyeglass Collection Program of Illinois Lions Clubs.

More than 250,000 pairs of glasses are collected annually. These are glasses which might otherwise be discarded.

Boxes, for the collection of these glasses, are available at various stores, businesses and offices throughout the state. When the containers are full, they are picked up by the local Lions Clubs and shipped to drop off sites where they are sorted.

Under Federal Government restrictions, gold and other metals are not allowed to leave the United States, therefore, the gold and metals are sold. Funds from the sale of these frames help pay for the Used Eyeglass Program and for the other humanitarian services.

The glasses are graded and analyzed and the Lion volunteers help wrap them for shipment to several agencies for redistribution to poverty areas in Central and South America.

Once the glasses arrive in the various foreign countries, trained doctors and technicians examine patients and provide them with prescription glasses.

If you have any used eyeglasses that you would like to donate to this worthwhile cause, call the Lions of Illinois Foundation at 1-800-955-5466 to find the nearest drop off site.

Help someone to see!!

SHIPMENT OF GLASSES

All glasses in any condition should be shipped by U.P.S. or dropped off at the Lions of Illinois Foundation drop off sites. Glasses, frames, lenses, sunglasses and cases are accepted.

DO NOT SHIP IN THE USED EYEGLASS COLLECTION BOXES !!! Empty glasses into another shipping box before mailing.

For more information on used eyeglass collection, please contact us.

Diabetes Awareness Isn’t that in April?

Fellow Lions, I am new to the Diabetes Awareness, but I am learning a lot! Did you know that in the United States alone there are 10.5 million persons with diabetes? More importantly, there are 5.5 million persons that have diabetes and aren’t even aware of it! What is one of the most common side effect of diabetes? Diabetic Retinopathy is the number one cause of blindness in the world!

How does that affect the Lions? We’re all aware of our Candy Day efforts. Most of us stand out on the street corner rain or shine to collect money from our very generous community members. We collect Candy Day money to help sponsor our programs to the improve the lives of our blind and low vision neighbors.

But Diabetes Awareness education can identify persons with diabetes and get them into medical programs that will PREVENT blindness due to diabetic retinopathy. The best cure for any disease is prevention. The more we talk about diabetes and inform our communities about the danger of diabetes, the more blindness we can prevent. There’s a saying that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. It really applies here.

Get your Diabetes Awareness Committee chair motivated to start spreading the word. There are materials available to help write articles for publishing in the newspaper. Get out the Test Strips that you hand out on Diabetes Awareness Day in April, and make them available for every function you sponsor. Give them to your local churches to include in their newsletter or bulletins. Offer to talk to community groups about the dangers of untreated diabetes -- it causes blindness!! Untreatable, irreversible blindness!

And finally, make sure you sponsor a Diabetes Awareness Day this Spring. There are two benefits to this day

  • 1) It’s another chance to educate your community on the dangers of diabetes, and
  • 2) it’s a chance to collect money to help fight blindness.

60% of the money collected goes to the American Diabetes Association for research and education. 40% goes to the Lions of Illinois Foundation to fund the mobile diabetic retinopathy detection program that comes to your community. It’s another method to detect diabetes early, while it’s still treatable.

Don’t wait until April to discuss Diabetes Awareness. Get started now! If I can help I any way: providing materials, Test Strips, or coming to talk to your club please call me (618) 537-2823 or email me ([email protected]).

ATTENTION ALL CLUB PRESIDENTS AND PEACE POSTER CHAIRMEN.

Lions Clubs International recently advised that District Governors no longer have the discretion to change any of the Peace Poster rules in effect prior to the District judging of posters. Therefore, if a club provides a kit to multiple schools, each would be considered a contest, and the club must submit a winning poster from each school. Clubs should continue with their program, judge the entries, select winners and forward one winning poster from each contest (or kit distributed) to Governor Hall to arrive NLT Oct 26 02 or you may deliver the poster(s) to the Cabinet Meeting at Central City prior to 9 AM on Oct 27. The Governors do have the right to change the judging date within their district as they see fit. In order to provide additional time for the district judging Governor Hall changed the due date for posters to arrive from Nov 15 to Oct 27 02.

Questions may be addressed to District Peace Poster Chairman Gene Laux at (618) 588-4465.

ATTENTION ALL CABINET MEMBERS.......Next Cabinet Meeting will be held at Central City Lions building on Oct 27 starting promptly at 9 AM. Written reports will be required. Please forward a copy of your report to arrive NLT Oct 21 so I can make copies for the meeting.

Send reports to: Cab Sec Ted Turner, 305 N Third St., New Baden, IL 62265-1120 or e-mail to [email protected].

THANKS

Lion Ted

Share the Newsletter!

The contents of the District 1-CN Newsletter are meant to keep Lions and Lioness informed about what is happening in their District. It is imperative that the designate that receives the newsletter for each club "shares" it with the members in their club. Club presidents need to review each newsletter and disseminate the information that is relevant to their club and it's members. I would hope that all clubs encourage their members to read each newsletter, whether it is by passing it around or read out loud at club meetings or by going to the District's web site at www.geocities.com/district1cn. If your club has an "announcement" that it wants to "share" with the District, please send it to newsletter editor Jessie Hickman at 1443 Queeny Ave., Sauget, Il 62206 or e-mail him at [email protected].

State Secretary/Treasurer Resignation

On September 17th, the Governors of MD-1 received an e-mail from Lion Wendy L. Sinnock advising that recent events demand that she resign from Lions of Illinois as State Secretary/Treasurer effective December 6, 2002. The Governor's had been advised earlier by Lion Sinnock that she would not seek renewal of her contract this year (which ends Dec. 6th). The Executive Council attempted to change the mind of Lion Wendy, obviously with no luck, in efforts of keeping her as state secretary/treasurer.

Lion Wendy has had her hands full at the State Office, doing the tasks of two people (we still have not been able to hire someone to fill the position of "office worker" that she vacated when she became State Secretary). Although not perfect, she has put in many of her own hours to make sure the Lions of Illinois were taken care of. For this we all owe her a lot of thanks and should wish her well in her future endeavors.

In light of Lion Sinnock's resignation, the following job announcement is being circulated:

Lions of Illinois, Inc. is currently seeking applicants for the position of State Secretary-Treasurer. Applicant needs to be self-motivated, demonstrate good communication and strong organization skills. Travel required, weekends included. Job duties included but are not limited to: recording of meetings minutes, bookkeeping using QuickBooks Pro, work with committees as required, assistance with meeting and convention planning. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and QuickBooks Pro a must. Send resume no later than October 17, 2002 to:

Council Chairman Eric Fenton

Monthly Membership Reports (MMR)

Lions International requires that all club secretaries turn in the MMR reports for their club by the tenth of the following month (i.e. your September report is due at International by October 10th). You should also be sending me the copy that is marked District Governor at the same time. If you don't send in your reports by the 10th, International requires that I contact each club, find out why the reports were not submitted, and report back to them by the 17th of the month with what actions this Governor took to obtain the delinquent reports. Please secretaries, help me out by sending International and myself the MMR's prior to the 10th of each month. I would certainly appreciate it. Also please do not forget to fill in the month and year (located on the left side of the form just above the black box that starts out with NOTE). If you have any questions regarding the filling out of the MMR or other required forms, please contact me or your zone chairman. Thanks! Gov. Jim

Lions Orientation CD and Cassette Now Available

As a partner-in-service project, First Lady Connie Artman of District 1-K is selling an audio compact disc (CD) that is a narrative of the history of Lions Clubs International, Lions of Illinois, and the Lions of Illinois Foundation. The CD , written and narrated by Lion Jason M. Artman, contains 12 tracts and is about 33 minutes long. Each CD sells for $8 and can be ordered by calling (815) 673-1648 or sending an e-mail to cjmpa@udnetnet. Similarly, First Lady Judy Fenton of District 1-G is selling a cassette tape discussing the history of Lions International. Shorter in length than the above CD, it sells for $5 each. Tapes can be ordered by calling (217) 854-2517 or sending an e-mail to [email protected]. I think each club would benefit by owning a copy of this CD and cassette and using it in the orientation of their new members.

Gov. Jim
