From the Governor's Desk

By golly the weather was terrific, volunteers were plentiful, and smiles from donors were abounding, so I trust everyone had a successful Candy Day.  On behalf of the Foundation and all the many children and adults that are helped by your commitment to “We Serve”, I say thank you.  As you prepare your Candy Day reports, please remember that all reports and monies must be turned in to the Foundation by December 31st.  As an incentive and a reward for a job well done, all clubs that turn in their reports and money by December 31st will be eligible to win one free nights stay at the Microtel Inn during our District convention.

I would also like to thank the clubs and children that participated in this years Peace Poster contest.  We had eleven schools participate and the posters were marvelous.  Eleven year old Andrea Bolt of St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Smithton won our District contest and will represent District 1-CN at the MD-1 contest in December.  I would also like to thank Chairman Laux and his committee of judges for all their efforts.

Speaking of thank you.  While I was visiting the Collinsville Lions recently, they had a visit from a special lady who wore a special smile because the Lions paid for her cataract surgery and now she can see again. She was there to simply say “Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!”.  What a special moment.  Makes all those hours of volunteering pretty rewarding, doesn’t it!

Remember, “Good Things Happen To Good People” and that is why “We Serve”.

Hope you had a wonderful Candy day. The work is not done until the paper work is completed. Send you Final Candy Day report to the Foundation as soon as possible. DEADLINE December 31, 2002. The sooner the better so you do not forget and the Foundation is always in need of money. If you do not have a report form contact your Trustee.

Your Foundation is in fine financial condition as I have returned from Trustee’s meeting the first weekend of November. According to the reports I have received only four (four) clubs in the District have sent glasses and hearing aids to the Foundation office. We have a great need for glasses. To date this fiscal year your Foundation has shipped over 300,000 pairs. Even Lions International is coming after glasses collected by the Lions of Illinois. Your Foundation has two other collection programs for your participation. These programs are keys and aluminum can tabs.

Sight and Sound Sweepstakes chairman will be receiving the books shortly after Christmas. Books will be processed and ready for distribution on December 26, 2002. You the Lions of this District are the back bone of the Foundation. Without your help the Foundation cannot function.

Yours

Trustee Lion Bill McKinney

Lions Leadership – District 1-CN:

Many of the District’s clubs are bringing in new members. New membership is essential if a Lions Club is to survive. District Governor Jim stressed communication in his address to Central City Lions, on the occasion of his official visit to that club. Communication, or the lack thereof, has been listed as the single most important aspect of relationships between and among people. Your new members will grow into stronger Lions when their club provides Orientation opportunity. This need not be a full-blown, sophisticated, complicated process – but – it should cover the basics.

At the very least, the NEW Lion should get:

1. An introduction to the International Association

2. All about your club

3. Your district, multiple district and country

You, Lion President, must decide when & how to deliver this information, how much time & detail to include, and who best to deliver the material. More than one presenter and more than one session is probably going to serve your purposes best.

Keep in mind, there are District Cabinet Officers – found in the

Governor’s Directory – who would jump at the chance to work with you on Orientation of your new member(s). How you choose to handle Orientation is in your hands. Just do it!

An introduction to International – At A Glance!

1917: Association founded in Chicago on June 7 by businessman Melvin Jones

1920: Association becomes International with the formation of a club in Canada

1925: Helen Keller challenges Lions to become “knights of the blind”

1931: First club in Latin America chartered

1943: Association helps form the Non-Governmental section of the United Nations

1947: First club in Australia chartered

1948: First club in Europe chartered

1953: First club in Asia and first club in Africa chartered

1987: Lions Clubs International becomes first service club to admit women as members

1990: SightFirst, a major blindness prevention initiative, is launched

Consider an Orientation program for your new Lion. Make it a significant event in his/her new experience. There is such a need to KEEP them after we induct them. Can you think of anything more compelling than knowledge. Lions are men and women dedicated to serving those in need, whether in their own community, or halfway around the world. Once this condition becomes part of the new member, he/she is hooked!

Orientation follows invitation, introduction, & induction – just like night follows day! Don’t forget your Zone Chairman when it comes time to deliver information & service.

Jerry R. Clemens,

District 1-CN Leadership

Special Dates and Deadlines

The 86th Annual International Convention will be held June 30 through July 4, 2003 in Denver, Colorado. Early bird registration and fees are due by December 31, 2002. Complete registration details and forms can be found in the latest Lions magazine. I hope every Lion and Lioness considers going this year. Also don’t forget that the District Convention will be held March 21 through March 23 at the Mariner’s Village (Microtel Inn) at Carlyle Lake. Specific details will be in the December and January newsletters.

50th Anniversaries

Congratulations to the Mt. Carmel and Columbia Lions on their 50th anniversaries. Both clubs held magnificent parties to honor this special occasion. It is rewarding to see so many people remembering the activities of the dedicated Lions of the past, while being excited about the many activities and years to come.

Important Information from International

As Governor, I have been asked to pass on the following information:

  1. Monarch and Charter Chevrons are catalog sales items. They are no longer automatically issued for free.
  2. Club Officers Report Form (PU-101) for 2002-2003 and the Annual Activities Report (A-1) for 2001-2002 are both over-due and needed immediately.
  3. Mailing original copies following a fax or e-mail communication is not only unnecessary, but also a cause of confusion and duplicate work at headquarters.
  4. The Standard Form Lions Club Constitution and By-Laws (LA-2) were revised recently. The new edition is available for down loading from the association’s WEB page.
  5. Clubs with balances due to International that are 150 days or older should make a payment to the association immediately.

MD-1 Forum

The MD-1 Forum featuring educational seminars for Lions and Lioness will be held Saturday, November 23rd at the Northfield Inn in Springfield from 10am to 3pm. Walk-in registrations ($20) are welcomed.

International Family Dinner

On Sunday, September 29th, I had the opportunity to proudly represent District 1-CN at the International Family Dinner at Chicago. During this evening I had the opportunity to discuss “Lionism” with International President Fukushima and several International Directors. The keynote speaker for that night was International’s newly named celebrity spokesperson , actor Tom Sullivan. Mr. Sullivan, blind since birth, is a remarkable person who’s work I have been familiar with for many years. I hope you take time to read the article about him in the November issue of the Lions magazine.

Remember, we are here to help!

Please do not hesitate to call me, your zone chairman, or a cabinet member with questions or problems you need to have addressed. THANKS!

Gov. Jim
