Konban wa (good evening) Fellow Lions and Lioness:
As you read this, Pat and I are halfway across the world in Osaka, Japan attending Governor's-elect training and the International Convention. What an experience this is going to be. Future newsletters will bring you the highlights.

At this time I would like to thank you for the privilege and honor of serving this District as Governor. I hope that I can live up to your expectations and fill the "shoes" of out going Governor Mike Johnston. The District owes a debt of gratitude to Governor Mike. I believe no other Lion has risen from the rank of "District Hospitality Room Bartender" to lead a district as Governor by simply saying "Sure I will be your Governor." Thanks Lion Mike.

You, the Lions and Lioness, are the District. Without your support, I will fail. With your support, we will succeed. My motto this year is Vision the Future....See the Success! We must continue to do the jobs of Lions by taking care of the Vision needs of your Club, our District, our State, and Internationally around the world. To do this, we must vision our goals, create a plan to achieve these objectives, and finally, we must complete the job.

As you have read, one of my goals this year is to distribute the newsletter and other pertinent information via e-mail and our newly created web-site at www.geocities.com/district1cn. Lion Jessie Hickman of the Cahokia Lions has agreed to be the new newsletter editor and web master. I want to thank Lion Ted Turner and PDG Terry Biegert who have done these jobs in the past. These jobs require a lot of time and effort with very little in return besides our THANKS! With this issue, we have started the process of e-mail distribution. Those without e-mail will continue to receive the newsletter by mail, but I vision a day in the future that all will be distributed by e-mail.

We as Lions need to be flexible, open minded, and willing to change. However, we should not forget how we got to this point. We should respect those decisions and ways that have made us strong. We can continue to prosper with hard work, dedication, fairness, and honesty. I am looking forward to an exciting year. As your Governor I will do my best to fulfill the needs of your Club and the District. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need my assistance. I hope to see everyone at the upcoming Lions College and the Candy Day Jamboree.

Remember, "Good Things Happen To Good People" and that is why "We Serve."

    Editors Note

Hello Lions of District 1-CN! It is both an honor and a privilege to be serving you as your Webmaster and Newsletter editor. As some of you know, I am a huge proponent of the Internet. Thats why when Governor Jim decided to go with the online newsletter I jumped at the chance to help out. But I am by no means a genius when it comes to the ways of the net. There is so much to learn and to do that, a person would have to take courses just to keep up. Not being much of a course taker I have taught myself the basics I need to edit the newsletter and put out a quality site.

For the past few years, the District has had a great newsletter. It has been informative and very well done. Lion Ted Turner deserves our thanks for doing such a great job; as does PDG Terry Biegert, because it was he who first brought District 1CN into cyber space. The Internet is a great source of information and I think people should be learning about our great District.

My hope is to keep the newsletter simple yet informative. Here are a few guidelines that we can follow to make this a great newsletter.

    • Each Club should appoint a technology chairman who has Internet access and can receive e-mail. I will need this persons e-mail address.
    • The tentative deadline for each newsletter is the 28th of the month. Any club wanting to submit an article should do so by then. All articles will be read, and depending on space may be shortened.
    • Clubs with out Internet access will still receive the newsletter via mail.
    • Clubs are encouraged to tell all of their members that they too now have access to the district 24/7.
    • Input....input...input, please if you have any ideas or suggestions to help me along the way, do not hesitate to e-mail me your ideas. I am new at this and can use all the help I can get.

Thats about it. I tried to make the Website and Newsletter as easy to use as possible. I think both are good for the person who lives on the net and for the occassional browser. Below is a list of the clubs I have that are receiving this letter by e-mail. If you are supposed to be getting the e-mail please contact me at [email protected] or by phone at 618/337-6612.

LIONS OF ILLINOIS DIABETIC EYE SCREENING PROGRAM

The Lions of Illinois Foundation - in a joint effort with Illinois Retina Associates - is expanding its vision service to include a diabetic eye screening program. This program is specifically designed to screen Illinois people who may be diabetic. The goal: to determine if the eyes of these people have undergone some form of change due to diabetic retinopathy. The program is also designed to connect people with the proper eye care provider in their area or community.

    DIABETIC RETINOPATHY

Diabetic retinopathy can have devastating visual consequences and can even lead to blindness. In fact, diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of new blindness in American adults. There are two types of diabetic retinopathy:

    • Background diabetic retinopathy affects mostly the central vision. If you have it, you will notice your vision becoming increasingly blurry. But this is not to be confused with intermittent blurry vision caused by fluctuating blood sugar.
    • Proliferative diabetic retinopathy is far more devastating. There are no clues that this retinopathy is progressing in your eye.

    EARLY DETECTION

Over the last 25 years, the National Institutes of Health and the National Eye Institute have conducted numerous clinical trials or research studies of diabetic retinopathy. All this research points to the same conclusion: Early detection greatly enhances the visual prognosis and outcome for all diabetic retinopathy patients.

Getting into a care program, as early as possible will greatly enhance long-term vision. That reality gets to the heart of this eye program: to provide communities throughout the state with a method of early detection of diabetic retinopathy.

    VISUAL CUES

It would be wise to contact your eye care professional as quickly as possible if you notice any of the following symptoms:

    • Blurring vision
    • Distorted vision
    • Double vision
    • Darkened vision
    • Reduced vision

Any one of these symptoms can be an indication of diabetic retinopathy or of one of its complications.

HOW DOES THE SCREENING PROGRAM WORK?

The Lions of Illinois Foundation is providing a mobile unit equipped with a photographer and a non-mydriatic fundus camera. This special camera takes photographs of the back of a person's eye. These photographs are then forwarded to Illinois Retina Associates for review by one of its retinal specialists. These specialists have advanced training in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetic retinopathy and easily spot any abnormalities.

After receiving your test results, if you are unable to find an eye care provider in your community - or would like assistance in finding a local provider Illinois Retina Associates and the Lions Club of Illinois Foundation will be glad to recommend an ophthalmologist who can care for your eyes.

    PROGRAM FUNDING

This screening is entirely free to all participants.

Funding for this program is made possible by the Lions of Illinois Foundation, the local Lions Clubs, the Lions Clubs International Foundation, Illinois Retina Associates and Ingalls Memorial Hospital Development Foundation.
