From the Governor's DeskWhen have you not met your
goal, but have succeeded none-the-less? Its when you have 33 of 34 clubs that
participated in Candy Day send in their reports by December 31st
(which is the Foundations deadline for completion) and the 34th and
final club send in their report by January 2nd. True, we just missed
the goal of having all participating clubs report by December 31st,
but to my knowledge District 1-CN is still the only District to have all their
reports in to the Foundation even by Jan 2nd in recent years. Take a
bow! WOW! That is a Lions roaring success! Congratulations go to the Mt.
Vernon Lions who won the nights stay at the Microtel Hotel during our District
Convention. Their name was drawn as winners during the Cabinet meeting January
25th from all the clubs who had sent in their report by December 31st.
I would also like to praise the Carmi, Cahokia, Collinsville Noon, Columbia,
Nashville, New Baden, and the Troy Lions for donating 100% of their Candy Day
collections to the Foundation. I personally would like to thank ALL CLUBS for
their tremendous efforts and generosity. But we cannot stop there.
So much will be happening at the District level in the next five months. March
will be here soon and so will our District Convention. There are many
activities planned to include games of chance on Friday night, three
educational seminars on Saturday afternoon, and the banquet with PID Battistone
as our guest speaker and a special auction on Saturday evening, and the
elections and awards brunch on Sunday morning. May 2nd will be
District 1-CN Night at the Races at Fairmount racetrack. In May we will also
have a dinner auction and June 5th (tentative date) will be a fun
day for Lions, Lioness, and their families at the St. Louis Cardinals baseball
game. Please plan on attending one or more of these activities. None of these
events will be a success with out the support of all the Clubs and Lions of
District 1-CN. I humbly THANK YOU! Remember, Good Things
Happen to Good People and that is why WE SERVE. Governor Jim Hall Govoners Tid Bits* The following article
appeared in Districts 1-A January 2003 Governors Newsletter regarding their
Mid Year meeting. By changing Mid Year to District Convention, I thought this
article was very appropriate for the Lions and Lioness of District 1-CN. Thanks
District 1-A! At a recent club
meeting, the new Lion asked the old Monarch, Hey you going to this District
Convention thing that the Pres talked about? The taciturn old Monarch just
nodded and said Yep, never miss it. But why? Youve been a Lion like for
ever, whats in it for you? Over a cup of coffee,
the two Lions shared their thoughts about the club, the projects and the reason
the old Monarch was going to attend his 20th District Convention.
You are never too old to learn something! The old Monarch then told the new
Lion about some of the things the club had done over the years from ideas they
got from going to forums and conventions. He told him about the friends he sees
from other clubs and pins he has swapped. The new Lion thought about the chore
he had ahead of him, to clean out the basement. And then he thought about the
enthusiasm the old Monarch had for going to the District Convention. Finishing their coffee, the
old Monarch asked, Well, you gonna go? Yep said the new Lion. Good, Ill
pick you up. (See you at the District 1-CN Convention March 21-23 at the
Mariners Village in Carlyle!) Emerging Lions Leadership Institute The Emerging Lions
Leadership Institute will be offered in Oak Brook, Illinois on April 10-14,
2003. This is a leadership school that is available to all Lions in good
standing with five years or less of membership, who has not yet attained the
position of club president, and must have served or are currently serving on a
club committee. Charter club presidents are also eligible. Lions Clubs
International will pay for meals and lodging for the actual days of the
institute. Participants are required to pay for their own travel and related
expenses. Applications are available from your Zone Chairman or Governor. Lions
International must receive completed forms by February 24, 2003. I hope those
qualified Lions of District 1-CN take advantage of this educational
opportunity. New Address PDG Charles and Dorothy
Young have a new address: 7408 Timberpoint Court, Fairview Heights, Il 62208.
Their new phone number is 622-1861. Please dont forget to send the Cabinet
Secretary and Newsletter Editor any changes as well (especially when you change
your E-mail address). Lions of Illinois State Convention I hope you are in the
process of making plans to attend the State Convention at the Renaissance Hotel
in Springfield on May 16 through May 18th. Registration forms and
hotel information are available in the January/February issue of the Illinois
Lions/Lioness Magazine, on the District 1-CN website at www.geocities.com/district1cn
, or contact your Zone Chairman. There will be five resolutions that will be
voted on at the convention. These too can be found in our Lions/Lioness
magazine on page eight. I strongly suggest that your club discuss these and
instruct your delegates appropriately. Feel free to contact me if you have any
specific questions on these resolutions. Lions of Illinois Foundation
Screenings Responses to the
invitations your club received from the Foundation regarding hosting the
hearing or diabetic retinopathy units must be turned in no later than February
20th. Please respond whether you plan on hosting the unit or not.
Did you know that one year your club is offered the hearing unit, the next year
you are offered the diabetic retinopathy unit, and then the cycle repeats
itself. Also that half of the District hosts the hearing unit, while the other
half hosts the retinopathy unit. If you have a problem with the schedule,
please contact the Foundation or the District chairman before deciding not to
host the unit. They will try their best to accommodate special requests.
Hosting a unit requires minimum efforts; virtually no cost to your club, helps
many to detect hearing and vision problems, and goes a long way in promoting
Lionism. I hope you will respond with a YES to the Foundation. Please also
dont forget about low vision screenings. Will your club sponsor one for
$291.00? NEW MEMBERS On behalf of the Lions
and Lioness of District 1-CN, I would like to welcome the following new members
who have been inducted during July 2002 thru December 2002. I would also like
to thank all the sponsoring Lions for working hard to make our District grow.

Lions
of 1-CN Thank
you to all clubs participating in Candy Day for your diligent
efforts making your District the only District with all
reports in and for increasing your contribution to the Foundation, many 100%. You
the Lions of this District are the back bone of the Foundation. Sight and Sound
Sweepstakes is the second largest Foundation fund raiser. As this is my last
year as your Trustee: I hope the Lions of this District will achieve the same
goal I have had since the start of the sweepstakes. Sales of one (1)
book per member per club. Take a moment and dream of all the deeds that can
be accomplished if sweepstakes sales equaled or exceeded Candy Day
contributions. Foundation
Trustees meeting is February 15 and 16 2003 in DeKalb Illinois. I will be
taking the truck and hope we can fill the bed with glasses collected by the
Lions of District 1-CN. Please contact me at 618-644-5803 home,
618-664-1432, office or email [email protected] to arrange
schedules for picking up the much-needed glasses. Do not forget your
Foundations other collection programs used keys and aluminum can tabs. I can
take these along if need be. I
encourage each individual Lion to make plans to attend all conventions
possible.

Editors Notes First
and foremost I would like to take a couple lines to give an apology. As editor of this newsletter I am the one
who is ultimately responsible for things getting into print. Last month I inadvertently omitted an
article sent in by Lion Gail Adams.
This article was letting the clubs know about the Valentines Day dance
to benefit the Radio Information Service.
I cannot change the fact that I missed it. I have apologized to her as well as to the Governor. I know that this is not the first time I
have done this and probably will not be the last. Governor Jim and I have talked and we are going to try and do a
check and balance type of letter. I
will be sending him my final draft and he will be checking for things I may
have missed. Together we will try and
come up with a better way of getting the information out to you. Again I apologize for the problems I have
had in the past. Did you hear? Were going to
