From the Governor's Desk

Membership - Extension - Retention - Leadership

MERL and I became very acquainted with each other during my governor's training and the 85th Annual Lions International Convention in Osaka, Japan. Whether it was one of my classes at "Governor's School", at one of the plenary sessions of the International Convention, the "Victory Celebration", or discussions with incoming governor's, those words seemed to echo in the halls around me.

Your new International President Kay K. Fukushima has set goals to address these areas. They are:
* Double in 2002-2003, and beyond, the average number of new clubs formed each year from 1100 to 2200
* Improve retention of clubs by 50% or more
* Increase threefold the numbers of district governors achieving the 100% award
* Create cadres of future Lion leaders
* Improve the image and prestige of Lions
Now these goals are not meant just for one club or district or multiple district to achieve alone. No matter what race, sex, or religion we are; whether we are Lions of Illinois, France, or Japan, we as Lions, are connected by the same common thread - "We Serve". I would like you to remember these words from President Fukushima, "Let us work together, with one heart, bringing the world closer together, in our continuing quest to "Build a Better Tomorrow" for everyone.

To help districts and clubs accomplish President Fukushima's goals, Lions International have created new programs and incentives to help educate and motivate your club. Your club can now purchase a "Club Builders Toolbox" which includes a set of best ideas and new materials for recruiting, involving, and developing club membership. As District Governor, I have a "District Builders Toolbox" that will be used by your District Cabinet to improve district leadership, administration, and new club extension. Two new videos are also available on recruiting and extension. As your District Governor, I have been tasked with setting up a MERL team which will be headed by VDG Jim Hauenschild, a "Top Ten Team", training "Guiding Lions", and a "District Orientation Team" to help support membership and extension in District 1-CN. You will here more about these programs throughout the year.

For the first time ever, Lions International have approved a pilot program of incentives that will give new clubs a refund of charter fees and will give existing clubs with current membership of at least 20 members a refund of one-half of new member entrance fees for new members joining during fiscal year 2002-2003. There are rewards and recognitions for achievement called the "Denver Convention Incentive Awards" and the "Academy Awards" of Lionism. There are "Public Relations Matching Grants" and a "Lions Emblem Road Sign" program for reimbursement when you replace your existing or missing Lions road sign. As with all programs, there are specific rules to follow to qualify. This and future newsletters will attempt to explain these programs. Specific rules and restrictions are also available from: Lions International New Clubs And Marketing Department, 630-571-5466 (extension 306) or on the International web site at www.lionsclubs.org.

As your Governor, I ask your club to consider participating and supporting these programs. Increasing your membership will not only build a stronger club and give you new resources, but now you may also qualify for a refund. If you have any questions regarding any of these programs, or any other State, Foundation, or District program, never hesitate to call me, your Zone Chairman, or any Cabinet member. If you need me to come to your club - JUST ASK!

"Good Things Happen To Good People" and that is why "WE SERVE". Governor Jim Hall

President Fukushima’s Theme Description

“ONE WORLD, ONE HEART”

"One World, One Heart", my personal theme for the 2002-2003 Lions year is to help unify, motivate and inspire all the members of the world to strive for excellence with purpose and commitment in their hearts. The "key" operative word in the theme is the word "one" Using this personal theme, we hope to reduce apathy, indifference and non focus by shifting our combined energies to the extension efforts which will be serving as our thrust to help "Building a Better Tomorrow" for our association. As thousands of non Lions join new Lions clubs and combine their hearts with those that already belong, we will begin to see the value of volunteers upon the world; we will then truly reflect and put meaning behind the motto, "We Serve" and the themes, "One World, One Heart" and "Building a Better Tomorrow"

The "One World" portion of my personal theme addresses the fact what we do impacts all humanity. As volunteers, we impact and make a difference in the quality of life of others throughout the world; we also help change the various attitudes of the population of many societies on the planet earth. Whenever we see a picture from outer space, we never see boundary lines that divide countries, states or provinces. All we can see are the various geographic areas, land and water of what we all share together as "One World" As Lions, we serve from our various parts of the world, we’re all driven by our common motto "We Serve" and not by "We Serve as a Lion For This Country" or "We Serve as a Lion For This Club" The one positive aspect that came out of the September 11, 2001 World Trade Center event was proving what can be accomplished when the people of the world can come together for a cause and purpose that is bigger than any one person or country. "One World" concept speaks to that thought and encourages us to collectively work together stressing the oneness of us all.

The "One Heart" concept refers to all of our individual and collective efforts in our desire to help humanity on a one on one basis and to make a difference. The common denominators within us all are to give of oneself without expecting anything in return, and to help those in need within our communities and throughout the world. This giving and philanthropic heart and desire of each of our members are what creates our synergistic effort to provide many services throughout the world. When this generosity is placed under a microscope, it appears like a giant "One Heart". This heart is being supplied by many smaller hearts of people called Lions, Lionesses, and Leos helping to make an individual contribution for the betterment of society, communities and the furtherance of the civilization of mankind.

The human heart makes no distinction between sex, race, age or nationality, nor does Lionism. Each heart is directed by one person who will determine whether it will serve as a giving, empathic loving and caring heart or it will not. We humans breathe the same air, drink from the same well an depend on Mother Earth to sustain us. Without this "One World, One Heart", none of us can exist nor survive as we live today; so we should learn how to "Build a Better Tomorrow" to make our "One World, One Heart" be the best that it can be for all.

Leadership

"Plan your work and Work your plan"

Lions District 1-CN Leadership, 2002 –2003:  August, 2002

Lion Mike Johnston, Central City Lions Club, is now a Past District Governor. He has passed the Gavel of Leadership over to Lion Jim Hall, Smithton Lions Club. From all indications, both Lions appear happy with their current status. Lion Mike, as Immediate Past Governor, has changed into comfortable shorts and open collar shirt for both a District Cabinet meeting and last night’s Candy Day Jamboree. Way to go Mike! Governor Jim is wearing his Official Uniform which, by-the-way, is expected. He has put on the mantle of leadership.

PDG Johnston and First Lady, Ruth, SERVED our district with distinction and deserve our heartfelt thanks for a job well done. Whenever the opportunity presents itself, each of us should tell them how much we appreciate their service. "Thanks, Lion Mike and Ruth, you represented the Lions of 1-CN well."

"Our" district has a new Leader. District Governor Jim Hall and First Lady, Pat, began their term in Osaka, Japan, July 1, 2002. Lion Jim has held his first Cabinet Meeting of the year. Several items of business were conducted. Not least of which, was the adoption of a Budget for 2002-2003. Our Governor demonstrated HIS commitment to quality leadership by introducing each Cabinet member by name, club and office. He did this without resorting to notes, lists or crib sheets. He set the bar pretty high for the rest of us. By doing his homework and attending to details, Governor Jim plainly communicated that, "Leadership requires hard work, planning and preparation."

He obviously took the time to plan and then worked his plan, which leads up to the primary thought of this article. Lion President, please consider making the following phrase a part of your practice of Leadership, as you tackle your year:

"Plan your Work, and Work your Plan"

Next Month’s Leadership article will focus on the subject of planning.

Jerry R. Clemens, PDG

Governor's Tid Bits

Stop the presses!!

That's because due to the great efforts of Cabinet Secretary Ted Turner, the District 1-CN directories and the monthly activities reports are back from the printers. All clubs should have received them at the beginning of this month. Your "new year packet" should have contained directories, forms, labels, and instructions. The July report can be mailed with the August report (no penalty of course). If your club did not receive this material, please contact Secretary Turner.

Can you "speak to the deaf"?

When I sat down and was going to have dinner at Camp Lions recently with two eleven year old boys who could not speak or hear, I thought I would fail at communicating with them. It was not long before they were teaching me a valuable lesson; that the only people who were handicapped at that Camp that night were us governors. Truly an "amazing eye opener for the sighted". I would like to personally thank all the Clubs that provided "treats" and those individuals that attended the Open House. Without your support and efforts, Camp Lions at Camp Dubois would not be considered the BEST!

President Fukushima apologizes.....

Just minutes into his acceptance speech, International President Kay Fukushima stepped away from the podium and personally apologized for the way the ending of the Lioness program was handled by International during 1991 and 1992. He recognized the fact that Lioness around the world were treated unfairly. For this wrong, he was truly sorry.

First come...First served....

Like any Governor, my calendar is filling up and scheduling events is already becoming difficult. I would ask that all clubs send me your date for my official club visit as soon as possible, but no later than October 31st. Please advise if First Lady Pat is invited and also enclose directions. I thank you for your cooperation.

Something New!

Don't forget about the District Point Contest. As usual points are tabulated from the monthly activity reports. There will also be the "best newsletter" contest again this year. New this year will be "special awards" given by your Governor based upon ????. That's right, only I will know what the categories will be. Your only clue is "Good Things Happen to Good People".

Roses are Red.....Lions are Generous

Please be as kind to VDG Jim Hauenschild as you were to VDG Jim Hall and participate in "Reward Your Partner in Service Day". What a great way to say thanks to that special person and support both your club and District 1-CN.

Club Builders Toolbox

Includes a set of best ideas and new materials for recruiting, involving, and developing new membership. Available from Club Supplies at International Headquarters for $14.95 plus postage. Topics covered include:

Hearing Aid Collection

A hearing aid Is very expensive. Purchased new, the cost can run anywhere from $300 to $1500 (and sometimes more), depending on the brand of the hearing aid and the features of the particular unit.

The State of Illinois has a few programs which purchase new hearing aids for qualifying individuals; however, the Lions of Illinois Foundation has recognized that a gap exists between the hearing Impaired people and the agencies which serve that population; I.e., there are persons who cannot qualify for assistance under existing programs where the purchase of a hearing aid is a financial luxury.

According to Alpiner (1977), "the majority of adults who need rehabilitation services generally do not receive diem. This Is due to a lack of interest or uncertainty as to where to go for help." The Lions of Illinois hope to eliminate this problem through:

  1. Their identification program -The Hearing Screening Mobile Unit
  2. Educational programs held in each of the Lions twelve districts
  3. The establishment of a Used Hearing Aid Bank (HAB).

The Lions of Illinois Used Hearing Aid Bank provides aids to needy Individuals who cannot afford to purchase a hearing aid or do not qualify to receive an aid from the State agencies. HAB does not duplicate services already available.

Because the demand often surpasses the supply, the Lions of Illinois would appreciate you donating your used hearing aids.

The hearing aids are collected and received in the same manner as the eyeglasses in the Used eyeglass program, through drop boxes or through public donation. Once received, the aids are then sent to the head of the HAB and sorted for usefulness. Most of them are sent to be reconditioned and coded, then returned to the bank. Then they are ready for distribution for any Lions dub that is requesting one for a person they are sponsoring. The remainder of the unuseable aids are sold for salvage to offset the costs of reconditioning.

Once an individual is approved for a hearing aid through his/her local Lions Club, arrangements are made through the Lions of Illinois Foundation for the necessary information to be forwarded to a participating clinic located throughout the state. The Audiologist will test the person and request an aid from the HAB that would be suitable for that person. The patient is then able to keep the aid for as long as necessary.

If an individual is entitled to a new hearing aid under another program, efforts will be made to see that the person receives an aid under that program.
