Author Rants v1.3 Ya know, I shouldn't write on an empty stomach. Things could get ugly really quickly. What the hell, they already have. So, without further ado, I give you the next increasingly uglier rant. BAD DUB! BAD! Yes that's right. Damn whoever decided to translate a wonderful anime from it's original language and screw every other word up in the process. Damn them many times over. If you watch the North American dub (grr... DiC), or any other dub, of Sailor Moon, then you are watching a completely different show from the original. IMO anyway. Sure they get SOME things right, but for the most part everything is different. Sorry, I'm bitter over the turning of Haruka and Michiru into cousins. That was a slap in the face. But you can read more about that in v1.2, so I won't go into any further detail on that matter. So, you ask me, what's so wrong with the dub anyway? That was a mistake by the way. Don't ask that. WHAT'S WRONG WITH DUBS??? EVERYTHING!!!! I wish I could type in a larger font. Gr. They're just bad, ok? They completely change around what was a wonderful show and turn it into... well, something short of a nightmare. Overdramtic? Maybe a bit. Let's talk names. Granted, some are pretty good changes. Minako becomes Mina, Rei becomes Raye, Ami becomes Amy, and even Serena isn't a bad change from Usagi. Michiru into Michelle makes great sense, and they even left Hotaru's name the same. But what the heck is this Amara (Haruka) junk? And Trista? HOW do you get Trista from Setsuna? Lita from Makoto...? And poor Chibimoon (as annoying as the kid is) got stuck with Mini Moon. Mini Moon? Say it to yourself. How moronic does it sound? My dislike of the Americanized names drove me to go through my own fan fic and comb out all references to the American show, including the names of Haruka and Michiru, which were on every other page... But I was talking about dubs. Not only do they screw with names, they screw with scenes. If there's an offensive or violent scene in the anime, *snip snip*, it's gone! We're not watching an original version of the show! We're watching watered down stuff. Who _cares_ if it's a show that little kids watch? TV doesn't influence children. That's my opinion anyway. So leave our violence in! Leave our homosexually suggestive scenes in! (there I go thinking about Haruka and Michiru again. one track mind, sorry!) Hell, leave the original dialouge in! Give us subtitles! What, you don't want to watch a subtitled program? Oh, right. The little kids that can't read. Fine then. Give us a dubbed and subbed version on TV. Fair enough? *author takes a momentary break to feed her grumbling stomach* A fed e.b. is a happy e.b. Now maybe I won't swear so much... ^-^;; Okay, back to dubs being bad. As some of you probably know, they left out some episodes in the earlier seasons because they didn't have any importance to the plot line. Or some bullshit like that. (aggg, language!) DiC's episodes (SM - SMR) are probably the most prude dubs I have seen (so far anyway). They cut scenes involving nudity, violence, perversion, and even avoided the death of the Senshi completely. But it doesn't stop there. Oh no. Zoicite and Kunzite weren't allowed to enjoy their relationship as men at all. Nope. Poor Zoicite had to go through a sex change and became a woman. *cough*homophobes!*cough* THEN they changed the Senshi's attack and power names as well. Which is just stupid because in the original Japanese version they were already English. And what about that 'Sailor Says' shi... junk. Talk about adding insult to injury. After changing the entire story line (pretty much) and cutting several scenes and episodes, they stick some stupid moral lesson at the end that wasn't in the anime to start with. AHHHH! To top it all off, they used some shots that were cut from the episode in those stupid lessons. In short, DiC is bad. Very bad. Those ^*#@ing !$@holes. Well, I'm sure what I just typed was pretty easy to decipher, but since I didn't type the word out, I feel much better. ^-^; Now, CWI did a much better job in keeping it as original as possible, but they still changed Haruka and Michiru's relationshi... *e.b. is yanked out of the picture by Steph and screamed at for having a one track mind* AS I WAS SAYING.... They made them into cousins. That's unforgivable. Punishable by death. Well, not really. But it should be. SMS stayed true to the plot line, although there were a lot of violence cuts, a few name changes, and some horrible slang inserted. *shudders* Man, they turned the Senshi into valley girls. Shoot me. And of course they cut anything that would hint towards a homosexual relationship between Haruka and Michiru. But overall it wasn't as bad as DiC. But, the fact remains, it's still a dub, and if you go out and look for the changes, they're there. A whole lot of them. Doesn't that make you feel deprived? -e.b.
