The Vulcan FCO had watched the action play out below him. Beginning with the two ensigns kiss on the bow, to Elliot's bumping into Roxy, to his final attack on Uxtar and the Captain. From the moment he left Roxy, Derek had noticed a change in Ensign Thomas; he had heard only a couple of words that were spoken to him, when they came to him on the breeze. From his vantage point he had also watched Roxy move to an area in order to watch what happened. Her reaction was one of disappointment when the aCMO managed to sedate him before anything could really happen. Derek waited for the deck to clear before climbing down from the rigging and going up to Captain Rikar.

"Lieutenant Stormwind I have requested everyone to return to their quarters," The red haired woman stated flatly.
"Yes sir, I heard," answered the FCO quietly. "However I felt I should give you my recent observations about our new friends and some other items of interest."
Sabrina studied the Vulcan carefully; there was a difference in his demeanor that she could not place. "Very well Lieutenant proceed"
Derek glanced around quickly to verify they were as safe from being overheard as possible. "Captain not everyone on this ships crew is friendly toward us. Roxy is only the most obvious; her control on Ensign Elliot is phenomenal, I only picked up a few words of what she said but it had the effect she wanted until the aCMO arrived. The other item of interest we are being followed, by a smaller and faster vessel.
Captain Rikar spun her head to stare astern. Turning back to her FCO she eyed him speculatively. "How do you know this?" she asked furtively.
"These people show no obvious knowledge of either the Vulcan or Hirogen species. If they did they would never have allowed my free access to the ships rigging. My eyesight quite outstrips most humanoid species thus I caught sight of the other ship." Derek answered in a matter of fact tone. "We need to know as much as we can which is why; I think it important to know what is causing Thomas' reaction to be so severe."
The red haired woman had been gazing out to sea as she had listened; she turned back toward her half human FCO her eyes widening as she realized where he was going. "You're suggesting a mind meld aren't you?
Derek looked straight into Sabrina's eyes without flinching. "Yes. I do not believe a deep probe is necessary but the information we receive may allow us to arm all our crew mates with a way to fight this type of control." Again the FCO answered in a matter of fact way.
Her face softening Sabrina smiled a very slight smile. "Derek I know you mean well, but as you know most people have a fear of what they call Vulcan mysticism. I'm not sure the others would agree if I allowed you to mind meld, even if it's in their own best interest. However I will take it under advisement for the moment. Return to your quarters Uxtar and I will join everyone shortly."
Stormwind gazed hard at the red haired woman, was about to say something else but then thought better of it, and with a nod of respect he turned and passed his Hirogen friend without a word.

Derek followed his Captains request, for the most part. He returned to the assigned quarters but went looking for the aCMO. He found her in Ensigns Elliot's quarters sitting quietly by his bedside as he slept off the sedative she had shot him with.
"Excuse me Ensign may I speak to you outside for a moment?" Derek asked with all the emotion of a Klingon blood worm.
Akira looked up at the Vulcan the pain in her eyes was very noticeable even for the half human. Looking down at the sleeping body of the man who only a short time ago had set her head spinning, she got up and followed the FCO outside.
"Ensign in your medical opinion is Elliot strong enough for a mind meld?" Derek asked totally without a hint of emotion.
Ensign Mitshiba's head snapped up to stare at the Vulcan before her, her face a vision of disbelief, pain and anger. The aCMO turned and went back into the room they had just left, Derek followed.
"Ensign we must find out what causes Elliot's reaction to Roxy." The FCO stated flatly.
Face red with rage Akira stormed back "We know what the cause is, we don't need any Vulcan hocus pocus to see it Lieutenant!"
"It is true we know the base cause, we need to know how Roxy was able to get him to act so far out of character with only a few words. Logic tells us it's the trigger we need to find in order to protect others," Once again Derek answered without a tinge of emotion.
"Captain! You can't really be considering allowing a mind meld? We don't know what could happen!" Spat out Ensign Mitshiba as both Uxtar and Sabrina entered the room.
Stormwind turned halfway to his right, the look on the Captains face was one he had seen many times before, it did not bode well for his career.
"Lieutenant Stormwind explain yourself." The anger was strong within Sabrina's voice.
"Sir! I was simply explaining to the Ensign why a mind meld could be of use, logically we should be using everyone's abilities to the utmost our technology is of little use, and we do need everyone at 100%. We cannot spend time watching our backs from members of our own crew." Derek answered in a perfect monotone.
Akira was just about to let go The FCO, when there was a soft cough from the bed behind her.
"Aki Derek is right, not only does logic dictate that we use all our resources, but the situation alone demands it." Ensign Thomas said in an almost whisper.
The aCMO turned to the figure on the bed. Elliot had levered himself up on his elbows. "Aki we may not always like what has to be done, or even agree with the reasons. But right now I cannot be trusted and I want to know why." Ensign Thomas had lain back down as he spoke. For a few moments the cabin was dead silent.
"Lieutenant Stormwind go to your quarters, we will speak later about this." Captain Rikar stated leaving no room for discussion.
As the Vulcan passed his Hirogen friend, Uxtar touched his shoulder and whispered "That my friend may have been the shortest promotion I have ever witnessed."
Derek looked at his friend and smiled.
