I strongly prefer people to see this on Video, not just the CDs. If somebody already bought the album, I guess they should buy the Video too!!! The selection of songs are from the two former albums, all the good songs. There's also a short documentary, so this might be the chance to know PORTISHEAD better. Anyway, I think that It must be a lot of hard work to get the orchestra , the band , and the turntable to synchronize so well... I wonder if they ever had a plan when the needle of the turntable accidently skipped......? Also the magical turntable work of Geoff Barrow is something worth seeing....

URBAN SPECIES are quite famous in Tokyo. Their first album made a big hit in Tokyo. They kind of suite the scenary of Tokyo. I guess that why they call themselves "URBAN" species..... Since the group only has Mintos (The guy who does the rap part) left, it has turned more into a solo project. But the sound still holds the taste of HipHop , TripHop, AcidJazz, Dub , Drum 'N' Bass, and Contemporary music. This single has three mixes, a Drum 'N' Bass mix by OPTICAL , which is quite famous , but I prefer the original VIDEO EDIT version much better 'cause it has that more of British Bristol thought of taste and the vocal of IMONGEN HEAP goes much better on it.

This song has more of HOUSE taste than TripHop , but you usually find it in the HEADZ section , so I guess I'd say TripHop!! I just love Bjork's voice!! She just is the club culture itself!!!! No matter how you mix it, it just sounds perfect!!! The ALAN BRAXE & BEN DIAMOND REMIX is my favorite.....

Probably Waiwan is not famous at all, but I found this pretty interesting. Waiwan is from England and his family is from Hong Kong (probably...) From his Asian background, people might want to compare him with DJ KURSH , but he's really not that kind of dope sound..... mainly Instrumental HipHop with some electro taste but not to do with MoWax.... He saids that his musical influences come from Jazz HipHop like ATCQ and Gangstarr, but I'm not sure where that comes out...... But I like the song "Filterd Funk". He has sampled Group Home, and that some thought of scense that I like. Also the Sax part goes pretty well with this track.

This is what we've all been waiting for!!! An album from U.N.K.L.E!! (I'm gonna write pretty much this time!!!) O.K, the the impression in Japan about this album is pretty good. Many people knew that it was gonna come out long before it came since the famous magazine "GROOVE" had a picture of James Lavelle and DJ Shadow on the cover of it!!! And they introduced quite much about it....Well anyway, I first went to TOWER RECORDS to get it, but I couldn't ......IT WAS SOLD OUT!!! It's quite a suprise to find some HipHop album being sold out when it's not even main source HipHop in Japan!!!.....So I went to HMV and found few and bought it. The cover art of the Japanese version of this album is done by NIGO, and I think the international version is done by FUTURA 2000. The first impression that I got was that the guest artists that they had in this album were so great!!!, just like some charity album!!! Well it starts from KOOL G RAP, Richard Ashcroft of the Verve, Thom Yorke from Radio Head, MIKE D from the Beastie Boys, and to my suprise Jason Newstead, a bassist from METALLICA. I actually didn't like the last part about using some bassist from METALLICA!! METALLICA was a band that I hated so much since I was like 11? anyway, I have hated it since I was in prep. school!! I prefer using bassists like Flea(Red Hot Chili Peppers), Fieldy(Korn), or maybe Tim Bob(Rage Against the Machine).....But it seems to be that DJ Shadow is a big fan of METALLICA..and also, James Lavelle needed some bassist that had total different background than them........ But to my suprise, when I heard the track that Jason played, I was really suprised!!! It blew me off!!! I never heard a Heavy Metal bassist play this thought of groovy bass line!!! He was using some thought of Fuzz type effector and played this incredible running type bass line. It was great! ! I was moved like the time I heard DJ Shadow's "Midnight in the Perfect World" for the first time!!!! About the album itself, I think it should be listened to just like a movie soundtrack.......James Lavelle is also expecting people to do so.... If abstruct HipHop was something that could express something just only by the track not using rap, This album was something that expresses the world of James Lavelle by the help of DJ Shadow. It is something that should be used to express the scenes that you see everyday....yourself..and this would be done by no discrimination of genre of music. Like some movie soundtrack, it doesn't matter what you use!!!! It's just has to be good music!!! The first track openes by the rap of KOOL G RAP and joined by flaming drums!! The rap ryhme was something difficult too.. KOOL G RAP had technique.....! The 5th track? this is one of my favourites. It reminds me of Massive Attacks song "Blue Lines" . It has Richard of the Verve on vocals and uses string orchestra sections which is supported by drum loops. I think all the drum sond lovers should listen to this... It's that basic of HipHop! The drums!!! The next track following this is something unique. It's totally alternative. It has alternative guitars playing hard riffs and vocals like Mansun.....very unique!!! Then the track with Jason playing bass and MIKE D doing the rap. As I said before it's good! And also MIKE D has this perfect voice for this track. It just goes well with it!!!!!!! As I've been writing comments pretty much up till this point, I also got to write the same thing again in Japanese!!! So if you don't mind I'll just stop writing right here!@!@!!! Please forgive me......!!!! Well anyway, in conclusion, I'd like to say that this must be one of the albums that would represent Abstract HipHop of the '90s!!!!!!!! You gotta buy it!!

This album is what I bought when I was like 13!!! I just had to buy it 'cause she looked so cute. In those days, she was just an artist who only made hits in club scenes of London and Paris, but these days she's a bigger artist now. I feel kind of pitty about it... But anyway I'm listening to it once again. The most interesting part abou BJORK is that she's from Iceland. This probably helped to her to have this certain atmosphere that she has now, an atmosphere you call TripHop. But some songs are House tracks. One of my favorite song in this album is "Venus as a Boy" which was used in the movie "LEON"....... Talking about "LEON" , the guy who makes music in all Luc Besson movies, Eric Serra, I think he makes cool tracks. Don't you think too that what he makes is also TripHop? If you want more of BJORK, you should try SUGARCUBES which was the band she used to be in before.

COLDCUT is from the NINJA TUNE LABEL of the UK. These two guys mainly started off trying out TripHop but in "TIMBER" they made many mixes trying out Drum'N'Bass. The concept of this single was probably "Nature" & "Green Peace?". There's many sampling of trees being cut by an electeric saw and voices of Native American tribes. My pick is the remix done by DARREN KNOTT. It features a transformation from TripHop to Drum'N'Bass.

PORTISHEAD is also a group from Bristol, ENGLAND. It has close relationships with MASSIVE ATTACK and other Bristol sound groups. But the main difference with others is that they use female vocal. The singer, Beth Gibbons, although I don't like her so much, but she sings in a core way, and this created a special world that they have now, and I like it! A deep and adult sound they havein this album was made in 1992 and they have a self-titled new album right now, but at this point that they had this album out in 1992, the leader Geoff Barrows surely had talent. With many HipHop beats these days imitates this kind of sound, he is surely a true beat maker. Songs you should check are "GLORY BOX" which was used in the LEVIS advertisement on TV, and the song "STRANGERS" which has a cool beat.

This album is probably his first album, Tricky now lives in New York, and made a new album. since it's recorded in the States, I kind of lost interest in the new album and checked out his first album, which seems to be this album "MAXINQWUAYE". Tricky is a former member of Massive Attack and his musical talent is widely known for his arrangements. Tricky usually only does back vocals on all his tracks and in this album, he used a female vocal to sing in front of him. But this brings up his cool voice even more!!! Songs you should hear are "BLACK STEEL" which rather has a rock taste, and "HELL IS AROUND THE CORNER" which uses the same track as PORTISHEAD's "GLORY BOX".

Massive Attack, formed in Bristol, England back in 1987 is a floating collective of Rappers, Dj's, Singers and Musicians. Mezzanine is probably their 3rd album(I'm not sure..), and I think that they are the true originators of TripHop beats. This album is said to have more relation with Rock, since there's lots of electric guitar sounds in it, and this gave a bad image that they are moving out from the TripHop scene, but I found this album more interesting than the other albums. It has lot to do with dark melloncollic sound and a deep bass. The greatest part is that it could be mixed with any HipHop. Songs you should check out on this album is "Risingson", "Teardrop", and "Exchange". Some of the songs are instrumental. Also some of the songs were used in the motion picture "The Jackal" (P.S. I liked the movie!!!).

This is the newest single by DJ SHADOW. It's actually more of BIG BEATS type of track rather from the Abstract HipHop that he usually makes. It's thought boomy way off track and I think it's hard to listen. (It might be my turntable which is causing this problem, but anyway....)@Good part of the single is, that it has the extended overhaul version of the "ORGAN DONOR" which was in the album, and this is good. It features scratch plays by DJ SHADOW himself!

DJ VADIM was born in Russia, and now live in the UK. He's only 23 and all his activity is now based inside UK. As one of the frontman of the famous NINJA TUNE LABEL(Which is said to be the originators of TRIPHOP.) he too totally remain in the low beat sound and calls himself as a B-BOY Scientist. The sound actually has nothing to do with Russia, but it is dope and junkie all the way. The album itself should be treated as a song, and it is hard to understand unless you listen the whole album. I think the target is for the TRUE-HipHop listeners.

DJ KRUSH is truely or maybe one and only person who is leading the Japanese Abstract HipHop Scene. In Japan he collaborates with Rock musicians to Jazz musicians. But he is an underground artist and he has nothing to do with the main Japnese music scene. THe album features remixes by DJ SHADOW and the single features some of his early works. It features his original sound of fat tracks with endless loops. The single is coupled with DJ SHADOW's SINGLE "LOST&FOUND".

Abstract HipHop of the San Francisco Bay Area scene. DJ SHADOW is famous for his use of samplers, some people say that he is like Jimi Hendrix using the samplers. The album is basically his first album, it is all instrumental hiphop. Lots of beats tracks. It probably had influences from the 70's funk and Bee-Bop style Jazz. I find it very very interesting compared from all the modern HipHop that sucks. People who basically listen to hiphop for the rap part might not like it at all, but guys who love beats and tracks of HipHop(the instrumental part) might love this kind of album. The song "Midnight in a Pefect World" is one of my favourites. If you like him, you should check out the single "LOST AND FOUND" which is his debut single, which isn't included in this album.
