This is the poster from the movie,which was released in cinemas in 1989.
This story is about a 16 year old headstong young mermaid named Ariel. Ariel
lives in Atlantica, with her sisters, her father, King Triton and all the other
mermaids in the ocean. Her best friend is a fish named Flounder. Ariel is
obsessed with the human world. Ariel has a collection of human things she has
found on shipwrecks.
The movie starts with Prince Eric and Grimsby on a boat, sailing out into the
sea, Grim is obviously sea sick as his face turns a frightening shade of green!!!
The crew discuss the legend of King Triton and the merpeople, Grim dismisses it
as a nonsense, but we soon find out that it is closer than they thought.
We now see that Ariel is on a shipwreck with Flounder, her best friend. She is
looking round to add to her collection of human items, she finds a fork and a
pipe, but as they are leaving they are chased by a particularly mean looking
shark, but luckily the pair manage to get away and they go to find Scuttle, her
bird friend, to find out about the items she recently acquired.
When they find Scuttle he tells them that the fork is a �Dinglehopper� and
is used by humans to comb their hair. He demonstrates this and shows a �lovely�
new fluffy style hairdo! He then tells them that the pipe is a Snorfblatt, and
is used by humans to make music. This is when Ariel remembers that she should
have been at a concert arranged by her father and Sebastian.
When Ariel returns to Atlantica, her father tells her that she has made a
laughing stock of him, but then Flounder tries to defend her with disastrous
results, mentioning that they went to see Scuttle was a bad idea, as this means
Ariel went up to the surface, and Triton has forbidden this as a human may see
her. Triton tells Sebastian that he must watch over her.
Sebastian follows Ariel and Flounder to her cave, which holds her collection
of human things. He is horrified as he knows her father would not be too happy
about this, however Ariel convinces him not to tell her father. Ariel then sees
some fireworks above, and goes to investigate. Ariel sees a human ship, and goes
to an opening too see what is going on, it is here she sees Prince Eric and
immediately falls in love with her. After a while, a strong storm sends the ship
into deep turmoil. Eric is thrown overboard, and nearly drowns, but Ariel saves
him.
Next morning, Eric is lying on a beach and Ariel is singing to him, trying
to wake him. Eric finally wakes up, but only catches a slight glimpse of Ariel,
but with her beautiful singing voice, he knows she is the woman for him. Next
moment, Grim and Max, Eric�s dog, find him and Ariel quickly jumps back into the
sea.
Ariel again manages to convince Sebastian not tell King Triton, and they go back
into the sea. Meanwhile, seeing Ariel�s unusual behaviour, King Triton is told
by Ariel�s sisters that she is love, so he asks Sebastian tell him what is going
on. When Sebastian goes to see Triton, he is nervous that he is going to ask him
about the humans, and accidentally lets slip that she saved a human - Prince
Eric�s life. Triton is furious.
While this is happening, Flounder has arranged a surprise for Ariel, he has
arranged for a statue of Prince Eric that has fallen off the shipwreck to get
into her cave collection.
Soon, Triton finds them, he is furious with Ariel, and is especially angry
when Ariel tells him that she loves Prince Eric. This is the last straw for
Triton and he destroys her collection. After this Flotsam and Jetsam, Ursula,
the sea witches pets come up to her and convince Ariel to go and see her, as
she will be able to help her.
Ariel goes to see Ursula, despite many protests from Sebastian and Flounder.
Ursula and Ariel strike up a deal - Ursula will turn Ariel into a human, for a
price - her voice. The terms are that Ariel must kiss Eric, and it can�t be any
old kiss, it has to be the kiss of true love by the time the sun sets on the
third day, if she does, she will become human forever, but if she doesn�t she
will belong to Ursula.
When Ariel arrives at the surface, she is a little wobbly to say the least,
and she has hardly any clothes. Scuttle soon finds her some rags to wear until
she can find something better. Soon, Eric and Max find her, and Eric thinks he
has found who he was looking for. But as soon as he finds out that Ariel can�t
speak, he thinks he is mistaken. But Eric takes Ariel back to his home to get
her cleaned up. The staff there clean her up and give her some clothes to wear.
At dinner Grim suggests that Eric take Ariel on a tour of a city on the
following morning, Ariel is very excited at the prospect and she can hardly wait.
The next morning Ariel and Eric have a brilliant time on the tour, and at the
end of the day they go for a boat ride in a blue lagoon. Eric tries to guess
Ariel�s name, he guesses few, but he has no luck until Sebastian whispers it
into his ear. To get a romantic mood going, Sebastian sings a song. At the end
of the song Eric and Ariel very nearly kiss but Flotsam and Jetsam tip the boat
over to stop them.
Seeing that Ariel is doing well, Ursula plots an evil plan, she turns herself
into a beautiful woman called Vanessa, and she uses Ariel�s voice, and some
magic to lure Eric. That night Eric sees �Vanessa� walking along the beach, the
next morning they announce that they are getting married.
Ariel is devastated, soon she will be Ursula�s property. As �Vanessa� is getting
ready, Scuttle sees her, and the reflection in the mirror she is using is not
�Vanessa� but... Ursula!!! Scuttle hurries to tell Ariel. Sebastian tells Ariel
to swim to the wedding ship, but without her fins it is incredibly difficult.
Scuttle flies off to get as many birds and sea creatures as he can to sabotage
the wedding.
The menagerie of animals arrive just in time, just as the wedding vows are being
said, the animals all launch into a full scale attack, Scuttle breaks the
necklace holding Ariel�s voice, returning it to the rightful owner, Eric sees
that this is who he should�ve married and rushes over to kiss her, but too
late!!! The sun sets! �Vanessa� turns back into Ursula, much to the horror of
the wedding guests, she grabs Ariel and dives into the sea. Eric rushes after
them in a little boat claiming that he is not going to lose her - again.
Meanwhile, Sebastian has told Triton everything, and Triton finds Ariel and
Ursula in her cave. He agrees to swap places with Ariel so that she can be free.
Ursula now has the power of the oceans. Eric soon comes in and Ursula points
the Trident at him, but Ariel manages to push it out of the way, so it catches
Flotsam and Jetsam instead.
Ursula tortures Ariel and Eric, and becomes a very large monster. Eric swims
off to search for a solution, and he finds his old ship, in shipwreck form, with
all the disturbances, it has risen from the depths. Eric manages to steer it
straight into Ursula�s heart, killing her and restoring King Triton and all the
other merpeople that Ursula has trapped.
In the next scene, we see Eric lying on a beach, and Ariel staring at him
longingly, and Triton has now come round to the idea of his daughter being with
a human, and gives her the best present possible, he turns her into a human.
Ariel runs up to Eric and kisses him, this transforms into the scene where Ariel
and Eric are kissing at the end of their wedding.
A few sad goodbyes are said by Ariel to her father, sisters and the other
merpeople and of course Flounder. The film is ended by Triton making a beautiful
rainbow over the scene.
