Mowgli, abandoned as a child, grows up in the jungle and is reluctant to return
to the man village. He loves Bagheera and Baloo very much, he pretends he is not
easily scared, but in reality he gets quite frightened by the other animals like
Shere Khan.
Bagheera
Bagheera, the panther who finds Mowgli. He leaves Mowgli with the wolves, wisely
knowing that they will look after them. He is concerned for Mowgli at all times
and when he is not actually with him he always keeps a sharp ear out for him.
Even though he loves Mowgli he knows that it is best for him to return to the man
village where he belongs.
Baloo
Baloo is the hapless fun lovin' "Jungle Bum" who also loves Mowgli a great deal.
At first Baloo thinks that Mowgli should stay in the jungle, but soon comes to
realise that Mowgli would be better off where he belongs. Baloo coins the phrase
"the simple bare necessities".
The Wolves
The wolves act as surrogate parents to Mowgli after he is found abandoned. After looking
after him for ten years, the wolves get worried at the return of Shere Khan the tiger and
decide it would be best if he went back where he belongs.
Shere Khan
Shere Khan the tiger is the villain of the story. The tiger hates all men,
and vows to kill Mowgli before he becomes one. There is only one thing that
Shere Khan is frightened of, and that's fire. This is how Shere Khan is finally
deterred in the end.
Kaa
Kaa is the other villian of the movie. He loves to torment Mowgli by hypnotizing
him, and he would love to eat him. His magical eyes can hypnotize almost anything
but his cunning plans are always foiled!
The Vultures
The Vultures only come in towards the end and they are the ones that manage
to cheer Mowgli up when he thinks he is unwanted. They are always arguing about
what to do next!
Colonel Haithi
Colonel Haithi is the strict leader of the elephant patrol! He believes in
high standards, and definitely doesn't believe in man cubs being allowed in the jungle,
however he does promise to help look for Mowgli when he gets lost. Junior is
Colonel Haithi's son.
Junior
Junior is Colonel Haithi's son and becomes friends with Mowgli. He is the one that teaches
Mowgli how to march.
