| Buckminster Fuller wore thick glasses, even thicker than mine. At Expo '67, one of the largest World Expositions, the U.S.A. Science Pavilion was a large geodesic (sphere-like)dome. I was there, I was seven. The impact of the fair with the avant-garde dome, and the feeling being at the international fair gave millions of people, caused pictures of the fair with the huge dome to make it into magazines for a few years afterward. Because the volume divided by the surface area is greatest for the sphere, a dome provides advantages in interior space, heating and cooling costs, as well as giving a sence of open expansivness when inside. One feels less boxed in and more bubbled around. The many arcs remind one of fluidity of motion, and naturual curving shapes. A dome uses triangles which are the stongest shape. The structural members are highly interconnected, with the whole structure helping make any particular area strong. A dome uses tension and compression, using a minimum of materials for a large structural integrity. Thus inexpensive and esthetic living spaces can be constructed using smaller amounts of resources and money than typical old-fashioned wood frame, insulation, and plywood construction. |
