Problems with bigger neighbours.........

Malaysia

They never got over the success of Singapore. After expelling Singapore in 1965 from the Federation, they must have expected resource-less Singapore to go broke and return a begging.

Much to their horror, Singapore's dollar broke parity with the ringgit in the 70s, and is presently twice its value.

2000 was a watershed year. Singapore achieved Developed World status and had the 5th highest GDP.

Malaysia resurfaced their favourite weapon, threatening to terminate our water supply agreements.

Indonesia

It can be a sobering experience to see such abject poverty 45 minutes by boat from Singapore.

In 1998, during the Asian economic crisis which devastated economies with unsound fundamentals, young children were begging.

They asked for loans. Billions of dollars.

Now, claiming that sand mining is destroying their Riau islands' ecosystem, they want to terminate sand sales which are vital to our land reclamation.
